YIKES!! We have those here in Houston also and I hate them!..... I killed one last year, just before he struck at a stray cat. He was 3 ft long!.... Good shot! Scary subject!

Cute little cottonmouth. I like the reflections in the photo. They really portray the shallow watery evironment.
Thanks for capturing its image without feeling the need to kill it.

Its a pity so many harmless snakes get killed each year because people can't identify cottonmouths. I've had people swear a snake was a cottonmouth, even after I have explained why it isn't!
And even when they are correctly identified, recent research (and my personal observations) suggest cottonmouths are very reluctant to bite! I wouldn't go picking one up, but they are otherwise very peaceful snakes.
