Another shot taken from the hide. I believe this to be a Hairy Woodpecker, Female, but not entirely sure. The Hairy Woodpecker and the Downy Woodpecker look exactly the same to me and I have both in my woods. To attract this Woodpecker I have put peanut butter on the side of this branch out of sight to the viewer. These creatures absolutely love peanut butter and will come down from the tree tops just to get some.

Family:

Picidae, Woodpeckers

Description:

9" (23 cm). A robin-sized woodpecker. Black and white, with unspotted white back and long bill; male has red head patch. Like most woodpeckers it has an undulating flight.

Habitat:

Deciduous forest; more widespread in winter and during migration.

Nesting:

4 white eggs in a hole in a tree.

Range:

Resident from Alaska and across Canada south throughout United States to Gulf of Mexico. Some northern birds migrate south for winter.

Voice:
A sharp, distinctive peek, louder than that of Downy Woodpecker; also a loud rattle on 1 pitch.

very good is beautifull

Cool shot, I like the composition. The background really defines the subject well.

Fantastic picture of the woodpecker. From the info available, I actually think this one is the downy woodpecker..

I found some web sites that show the differences etc and there is a really useful picture at the bottom of this page. The difference seems to be down to size and a comma around the neck line. Yours has a nice clean neck line, the hairy one doesn't.

I love the tip about the peanut butter. I think I will give it a try with my woodpeckers which are really shy and see what results I get.

thanks for the info and for sharing.

Hi Greg,
What a beauty! The composition and framing o this is outstanding. The soft light has render beautiful subtle colors. Detail is very sharp. Your control on the DOF was perfect here. Stunning OOF backround sets this up very well.
Superb work!
Scott

Hi Greg!

Superbe pose here. Of course focus and exposure are at their best. Composition is absolutely well balanced, bird's position is ideal. The soft light renders good details in highlights and shadows. It may be your decision not to alter your images and I respect this, but esthetically, I prefer not to see "shit" trace in picutre, so I did a simple WS cloning it out. But I understand if you say you prefer to leave picture as they where originally taken.

Splenid image you took here, and TFS.

Super close, nice details onthe woodpecker. Very good and nice to see a Nikon's D2X's work. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Greg,

You captured the Downy, you can compare it to the hairy I have. The downy is smaller, the hairy is about a blue jay body size. Anyhow, beautiful capture and well done on the composition. Excellent work.

Hello Greg, very nice portrait. Lovley BG and superb details and composition. Very nice work.

Greg,

This pioc has great Composition, POV, DOF, BG and sharpness which shows detail of the subject. The colour of the BG shows the black and white subject off quite nicely. TFS,
Sheriff
