[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a Red Paper Wasp, Family Vespidae, Polistes carolina. One of my first posts to TN in August this year was the Golden Paper Wasp, shot with a Fuji S5000. I'm relatively new to macro photography & I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at TN. I've learned a great deal in this short time thanks to your participation/input. This will be the first of a series of Texas Wasp photo's this week. They are usually not the most photo "friendly" subjects as they are most often moving quickly about as in this case. ID: Red overall with dark wings. RANGE: Southeastern & south-central U.S. HABITAT: Woodlands. SEASON: Summer-fall. FOOD: caterpillars, flies & beetle larvae. They actively forage during the day & rest on the nest at night. You can see this wasp attacking its prey Here I used aperture priority, ISO 100, EV-.3. +2 macro filter, hand-held & pattern metering. PP in elements 3. Hey, I even tried out the "spot healing tool" to blur some distraction left FG! Gee whiz, I quess this makes a 100. Thanx again for all your help!!

Fantastic photo congratulations.

Impressive wasp, due to your very good shooting position. Superb colors enhanced by the background. Great details. I'm surprised by the very large DOF range in this macro. Very good shot, Howard.

All your photos are superb. You are the specialist.
Very nice close up, clear and colored.
Good job.

Howard I see no nits. I think it's an excellent macro. Great work.

I think I've seen these here...at around 8,oo0 feet on the summit of Mount Egmont, with very deep snow on the ground.
Not quite as clear as your usual, but,as you said,it was moving around.
Nice colours here.

Hi Howard, congratulations on your 100th post. Great wasp picture, it looks like it's in a nasty mood. Good composition and colours thanks for posting.

Very good macro Howard.
Good colours, composition and details.
It's a bit out of focus, maybe beacuse you hand held the camera and use a long shutter speed 1/80.
You need a shorter time when you shot macro hand held.
Next investment my friend, is a tripod.;-)
Very well done.
Congratulation to your 100th post.

The Guru is back ,,bigger and meaner,, , I like the shape even though tough is likely that due to the dynamic posture you lost the sharp focus on limbs ...

A real great shot, looks like one of our Hornets.
Looks like the time here has been well spent I rember your first post and this is a hughe leap forward. try the clone tool for removing distractions.

It's a beauty, this Carolina of yours. We don't get them here. The yellowish-red colour is very nice. Great shot.

Congrats on the 100th one, Howard. It is a pleasure to watch you work. Keep 'em comming.

" Why to have chosen me as the hundredth? " She seems to say.
" Why I and not one of your pretty spiders. Ah! I understands: you want to test your new lens, go to it, but the next time brings a tripod!" ;-)
Thanks for sharing with us your unique talent as photographer and writer, Howard.

If a waspo looks at me like this one, there will me camera shake on my part. The color and exposure in this shot is great.

Very well done and thanks for posting.
