Garden spider (Argiope appensa)

A BIG THANKS to Greg (greghume) and Nigel (merlin) for their help with the identification.

According to my research, this is the 1st post of this type of garden spider to be published on TN !!!

This introduced spider is easily seen on all the Main Hawaiian Islands in a wide variety of habitats from coastal areas to upland forest. The species is black and yellow and about 2 - 2.5 inches long in the female and brown and about 3/4 inch in the male. Webs are constructed between branches, bushes, human constructions and anywhere that prey might be captured. The webs are often large and have a white zig-zag of webbing from one corner to the center.

A lot of questions of the type "What spider is this?" concern Argiopes people find in their garden. In the US Argiopes are also called "garden spiders".

These spiders are one of the most handsome spiders we can find on this planet. They are large, have a remarkable web and are beautifully colored and not venomous at all.

The spider can be identified by the construction of its web. It is the only spider that makes a zigzag line or a cross of zigzag white web material in its web. The spider hangs, head down, in the hub. By appropriate stimulation the spider vibrates its web vigorously until it becomes an indistinct blur. Males are much smaller than females.

The female spider can be seen making egg sacs. She puts her web-spinning superiority to the use of constructing a perfect egg sac. The egg sac often hangs in plain view in the web or tied nearby to herbs or other objects. She often makes more than one egg sac.

I took this picture on the Big Island in Hawaii walking through a path... It was just next by us and we almost missed it.

Hi Srephan,
I can't ID it, but I am sure someone will be able too. Great shot! Exposure looks perfect. Great colors and sharp detail! OOF backround looks perfect too. Hows is the Hawaii trip??? Loks like you are getting some great shots.
Scott

Hi Stephan
It looks like some type of argiope, a garden spider, often called a zipper spider because of the zigzag web pattern called a stabilimenta. Very crisp, clean capture.

Salut Stephan!

Comme je peux voir, Hawaii n'a pas été fructueuse en photos sous-marines, mais elle a été en macro. Netteté, exposition, PdeC, cadrage serré, tout y est.

Chapeau pour cette belle image.

Awesome shot Stephen! The soft DOF is well chosen is this excellent capture. The details & colors stand out well. :)

Claudine

Just love these spiders. You did well to get the spider and the web in such a nice manner. Great shot.
