Mourning Dove
(Zenaida macroura)
The Mourning Dove, endemic to South, North, Central America and the Caribbean.
The Mourning Dove is from 11 to 13 inches long, with a wingspan of 17 to 19 inches. Weights range from 4.5 to 6 ounces. Mourning Doves have strong legs and feet. Powerful leg muscles enable them to launch rapidly. Generally, tough tendons and a limited supply of blood and nerves in the legs and feet of birds make them somewhat resistant to freezing. Mourning Doves, however, can lose several toes from freezing, making it harder for them to scratch on the ground while feeding. The Mourning Dove wing is long and pointed, and almost falcon-like in appearance. This design enables it to efficiently maintain high flight speeds of up to 55 mph. Mourning Doves have a long pointed tail, giving them a distinctive streamlined silhouette. The tail has long central tail feathers, but the outer tail feathers are tipped with white. Doves can live up to 10 years in the wild and up to 18 years in captivity. The small black spot on the face distinguished it from the now extinct Passenger Pigeon.
The sex of a Mourning Dove can be determined with lots of experience. Male Mourning Doves establish a territory in early spring. Their territorial cooing song, sounding like oo-ah? cooo-cooo-coo, with the accent on the first syllable, is heard from dawn to dusk. The male performs an aerial flight display from a high perch by circling out and back while holding his wings out straight and a bit lower than his body. Banding studies suggest that these doves mate for life. Mourning Doves raise three or more broods in a single breeding season. Both parents build a flimsy platform nest of twigs located from 5 to 25 feet up in a tree or bush. Two white eggs hatch in about 14 - 16 days. One egg is laid in the evening, and the second on the next morning. The male usually incubates the egg during the day, and the female incubates at night. Nestlings, cared for by both parents, fledge in about 12-14 days. The parents continue to care for the fledglings until they are 25 to 27 days old.
Mourning doves are primarily seed eaters but will also feed on some insects. Corn, sunflower, millet, wheat, ragweed, pokeweed, panic grass, and white pine are just some of the seeds that comprise their diets.
It is considered a game bird in many states of North American. Its flight speed has been clocked at 40-55 mph, but a strong tailwind will result in higher ground speeds, making it a difficult bird for a hunter to hit. Many doves fall prey to hunting and predation by hawks.

Thank you all.

I liked the note, and the picture is great, pretty bird, the diaginal wire make it more interesting.

Hi Jorge,

Nice bird. The sharpness is very good. I like the color. But i'm not agree with Scott. I don't like very much the diagonal wire. It would have been better with something else in diagonal, not a wire. Mayby a tree's branch or something like that.
Have a nice day.

Martin.

Hi JC,
Nice picture that wire positioned Diagonally,Good sharpness, colors and composition.

very nice shot, jorge! :-)
good composition and pov.
i think the diagonal wire adds very well
to the shot. ok, something "natural" maybe
would have looked better, but the dove is
sitting on a man-made piece of metal
and there is nothing one can do about it.
on the one hand the photo somehow has a
pleasant calmness, but at the same time the dove
seems to be on high alert keeping an eye on you.
well seen & captured, thor.

Late night, early morning.
Quick visit.
Great capture, thanks for posting.

Hi Jorge,
I like it. Love the composition with diagonal placement of the wire across the frame. Lovely warm light adds great mood to the image.

Great capture ! I love this wire in the diagonal, even if it's not very natural - birds don't sit on a tree branch just to please the photographer ! :-) Details and colors are nice too, with this wonderful blue sky. Very well done !

Hello Jorge, simple and effective, it's a pleasing shot. Minimal and it works well.

Bonjour Jorge

Saludos
