Excellent capture with amazing details.
Great composition (although in my opinion a little tightly cropped on the right), good POV (point of view), and lovely colours. The BG is well removed thus enhancing the reptile and the exposure/lighting was very well controlled.

Very interesting shot!
The tight crop is always good when you want to concentrate on some details of animal not the animal itself. You said you like the structure of it's skin. Such tight cropping helps to show the scales better, so I think it would be a good thing to do, even if there wasn't anything distracting in BG. I like it.
Apart from that, great sharpness and lighting.
