This adorable little Eastern Screech Owl was posing in my backyard last evening. I was surprised to discover it when I took the dog out for "last call" before bedtime. It flew in front of us and then landed on a low branch and watched. I had never seen a Screech Owl before so I thought at first it was a small Hawk that was roosting for the night, but on a closer look I realized I was looking at a small owl. I took the dog back in the house, changed the lens on my camera and added the speedlite and went back outside and it was still there. It let me get quite close and posed for a good 5-10 minutes. when I was finished photographing and turned to go it flew to a higher branch. I will get a Screech Owl nesting box and put it up in hopes that it will return to make it's home in my yard.

There is a red version and a gray version of the Eastern Screech Owl and many variations in between. They are small , about the size of a plump Mourning Dove, also "eared". Their call is like a horse's whinny. They hunts small rodents and insects from a perch and are most often found in open woods and the edges of forests.

I used an ISO of 1600 for this image and had to manual focus as well . The yard spotlights were the only source of light so it was too dark to use AF . Although I am very impressed with the small amount of noise at ISO 1600 with this camera I still wanted to improve the final product and I ran it through Neat Image.

Very well done - I hope the nesting box idea works out well and he stays in your yard. About the picture - I think it's an excellent shot of this beautiful bird. Good sharpness on details - funky eyes it has. Very nice photo, TFS.

Very nice shot, this eyes are really penetrating. I like very much the moody but sharp lighting too. I would have personally cropped tighter at the right, but it is a personal taste. Thanks!

This one has the look of a school mistress summing up a naughty pupil ;-))
It must have been quite an experience suddenly finding one like this in your back yard, best of luck with luring them to breed there, too.
Sharpness is excellent, the camera couldn't have done better. The whites are very white, I wonder if it would have been an idea to diffuse the flash a little? - Not that the thought would have entered my mind, had one like this suddenly appeared in front of me one night ;-))

Lesley. Impressive shot! Neat subject with a very unique look.. I find it interesting to see in your notes the ISO ranges you can work at..Now that's a "real" camera!! ;-)

Very good shot Lesley.
Great details, good colours and a good pose.
Good luck with the nesting box.
Very good work.

Well seen and nicely captured Lesley. Very nice owl well presented here. Good job.

He is not happy to see you . :) Lovely facial expression of this adorable critter. Excellent usage of flash light. Very nice shot Lesley. My only nit would be a slight amount of red-eye.

Eyes of this owl make the picture! Great shot.

Very impressive image Lesley.
Owls can be very difficult to shoot at night, you have avoided the red-eye syndrome and have really good DOF. The lack of noise at ISO 1600 is unbelevable. Composition is very good. You have done a very good job here.

Very good shot Lesley, did you try with a longer exposure without flash?
Well done.
TFS.

Lesley, Lesley, Lesley, fantastic!!! Excelent composition.
Just a bit of redeye that you can easily fix.
The neat image may have caused some feather details too smooth.
Excelent, well done

Mike

Hi Leslie
This is an adorable little scopsie, as we call these Otus owlets in SA. They are amongst my favourite owls You did a spendid job and that lens of yours does better work than my OS, but I think it is the photographer that does it!
I am glad to hear you, too, have trouble shooting with it when it is dark - I thought I was going bonkers in the Kalahari while chasing Gerhard's scorpions because the auto focus kept hunting. The cure was my wifr with a 500 000 watt spotlight - the auto focus works like a dream. I shot some jackal in pitch black, using the spot, and got some of my best ever pics, I think.
I sure hope the scopsie comes back to roost, lucky tou to have such a visitor.

They say it is good luck when you are visited by owls. I hope it is just that for you.

You managed very well with the flash and the detail is sharp with good DOF.

Very well done and thanks for posting

Jolie photo de ce petit hibou, Lesley. Je vous trouve bien chanceuse de l'avoir photographier dans votre cour arrière.
Un regard hypnotique...
Un bon ouvrage: image et note.
