Had to reach back into the archive, as work and weather conspire to keep me from getting out more to take new photos. This was from a trip to the lock and dam that is on the Mississippi River near my hometown.
The White Pelicans follow the river down south to their breeding grounds. They stop to rest and get a easy meal when the fish get stunned coming thru the water turbines. The birds just scoop up the floating fish.

This big guy had just tucked his wings and started his landing descent to the water, coming almost directly over my head. No need for a super telephoto here. These guys are huge.

White Pelican
Pelecanus erythrorhynchos

Description - This huge bird reaches heights of 55-70 inches. It is white with a long, flat, bright orange bill and black tipped wings. During the breeding season a short, yellowish crest appears on the back of the head and a horny plate appears on the upper mandible.

Distribution - The breeding pelican is found from Mackenzie, British Columbia south to northern California. Wintering grounds are from central California, the Gulf Coast, and Florida south to Panama. They prefer shallow lakes to coastal lagoons.

Biology - This pelican is gregarious, usually travelling in flocks and nesting in colonies. 1-6 white eggs can be found on a low mound of earth and debris. They do not dive for food but cooperate to surround fish in shallow water where they scoop them into their pouches. In recent decades the number of pelicans has dropped drastically because of the use of pesticides, human disturbance and the draining of wetlands.

Hi Scott!
Flawless capture! It is very hard to take photo of bird against bright sky, but you did it excellent. Colours and details are very nice, same as pose. Both, bird and sky are very well exposured. Great job!

Hello Scott,
The action is so well frozen here, and the moment is just right!
But still with superb colours and details, and framing is very pleasant...
An image for textbooks!
Greetings,
Pablo -

All perfect: colors DOF sharpness POV. TFS

Hi Scott,
Fantastic in-flight shot, nicely framed and as you say at 200mm pretty close! Excellent exposure, perfect detail and colour. A well taken and excellent in-flight shot, interesting note, you have to feel sorry for the fish though, a turbine then a pelican :-)
Cheers,
Adrian

Hello Scott, amazing capture; sharpness, colors, light, composition, everything is excellent ! TFS

Scott,
Ahhhh, I remember this day as if it were yesterday. Cold as heck and sunny. I couldn't believe how many pelicans there were. You captured this one well, I like his webbed feet and the detail on his breast feathers.
This guy was circling to land....it seems like the position he's in. They curl their neck like this. Nice blue sky and composition. You gave him plenty of room to fly into. You can make this Canon 20 Rock!
Glad you posted this as it brought back a great memory.

Hello Scott! It´s always nice to see your posts here and in TE! This is a very nice bird. It´s funny the way of they hit the water when landing, don´t you think? Well, I´ve never seen this kind of pelican doing, but I´ve seen that common brown pelicans of Florida doing many times. You´ve captured a nice POV here, in wonderful colours. TFS!
Have a nice sunday!

Hello Scott,
Very nice shot! You've captured the bird is a very interesting pose and with some very good details. The pose maybe make the picture a little difficult to frame, but this composition works quite good.

Great in-flight, I love the complemenaty colours with the clear blue sky and the yellow feet + beak. Great composition with the bird coming down diagonally like an arrow, you left him enough space to move in front, works very well.
Excellent!

hi scott
merveileux,la netteté est irreprochable et l'oiseau ressort bien sur le ciel uniforme.
tres beau cliché.

Simply superb! A wonderful picture of a majestic pelican! Great composition and superb colors. Sharpness and DOF also are very good. The contrast of the bird with the bule sky is very nice. Just simple and perfect. Excellent job! TFS!

Hi Scot, Just by the tone of your comment about my picture of a bird in flight, I concluded that you must have some in your collection. So decided to search, found this after two pages :-). As I see most of the photographers here on TN who have got a GOOD pic of birds in flight have a minimum SS of 1/1250 or higher. I shot at 1/800..... hence the softness in Image. I get to learn a LOT when I see EXIF from pictures like yours.

Good work here :-), Regards, Kiran.
