This Black-crowned Night Heron was one of a number perched around the perimeter of a small fish-processing plant on the Fisherman's Wharf. Also mounting guard was a Great Blue Heron, but they are expected to active in daytime. I say active but all the birds were stolidly hunched and staring towards where the reject fish bits would emerge from the building. There were surprisingly few gulls maintaining watch. Maybe the larger watchers were too intimidating.
As well as being at 135mm I have close cropped to pull in sufficiently close while still keeping detail. Otherwise some small adjustments of levels and sharpen. |

Good shot! I really like the expression on the Heron's face, and you've captured it really crisply too. I'm not quite so convinced by the fuzzy dark thing on the left of the frame though - I'd be tempted to clone it out. I'd also consider using Contrast Masking to bring out a little more detail in the darker areas of his plumage. That said, it's a lovely capture :-D

Very interesting and simple image. I like the combination of the bird and the building in the background in the same colors. And how also the color of the wooden thing it is standing on works with the color of its eye. Technically very good shot.
I would crop out those little distracting elements on the left and on the botton right.
Welcome TN. Very nice shot. Great detail. The compo of the bird in the middle is because of the building. I did a WS to try and take out the building, please tell me what you think. Great work. Keep 'em comming.
Very nice little heron Peter, some of the herons in the UK have learned to stand by fishermen and beg for fish as they are reeled in.
Nice capture of this little chap - well, little as herons go ;-)). I don't mind the building in the background as it goes to show these birds will also feel at home in an urban environment. I just think you should rotate the picture a little clockwise to get the house straight. On the other hand I also like Gerhard's WS.
Nice little heron Peter. Well focused, nice colours and well handled light. I too don't mind the building for the same reasons as Bente though I like the well done WS from Gerhardt too. The heron does not look so big as we are used to see - how big is this one?
