[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is an adult Brown pelican in non-breeding plumage. This was taken on the Homosassa River where underground springs feed the waterway and keep it at a constant 70 degrees F. year round. This is where Manatees come from the Gulf of Mexico and spend the winter feeding on the underwater vegetation. Fish are plentiful giving the Pleicans a bounty of food. Brown Pelicans feed much differently from the American White Pelican. White Pelicans hunt and feed while swimming in small groups where as the Brown Pelican hunts while flying and makes a spectacular aerial dive with amazing twists and turns before hitting the water to grab their prey. These pelicans are smaller than the Whites and are most commonly found on the southern coastal ways of the US as opposed to a much wider spread area of the American White. The juvie first yer Browns are just that...brown with some white on it's breast. They appear to me have an endearing comical look to them and always remind me of the one of the heroes in the movie " Finding Nemo " which is one of my all time favorite movies!
