[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This little male quail met me as I came home from work a few weeks ago. As I came near him, his little bride was spooked from the flowers below. She was well hid and I didn't see her initially.

We converted this old rural mailbox into a flower planter to which Mr. Quail decided to claim as his vantage lookout.

This attractive bird (Callifpepla Californicus)
is known by many names, including, California partridge, Catalina quail, Topknot quail and Valley Quail. It is known commonly in California as the Valley quail, to distinguish it from the Mountain quail; but ornithologists now recognize two subspecies, the California quail and the Valley quail, both entirely distinct from the Mountain quail (Forbush, 1917).

The range of this quail is made up of varied topography and climatical conditions. It is found from Baja California, Mexico, up through the western states into Canada. Its eastward range goes as far as Nevada, Utah and Idaho with introductions in Colorado.

In captivity, the California quail is one of the easier quail to get to breed. They are by nature very nervous and thus do not do as well in small cages as some of the other quail. It is believed they do much better on the ground if you have a drier climate or if you make dry ground available for them. Many are raised on wire every year so there is no hard rule about them.

This particular bird is wild. We have many quail that reside in the juniper bushes on our property.

Welcome to TN Tim, very nice pose fromm this cock bird, he is very well seen a little cramped at the front, which could be cloned in if you hadnt got it in the original. there is also possibly a little over sharpening as there is a litttle bit of fuzziness around the body of the bird.

Hi Tim, nice seeing you here on TN. I remember your "Mr Quail" posting on TE a while ago, and I'm glad you're following up with this fine closeup. In this capture, the bird fills the frame really well, and the details on the plumage are rendered quite pleasantly. Well done.

Nice capture of this bird with very good detail. I would have preferred a bit more space left and right, though. There's a distinct halo around the entire bird, possibly a problem occurred during sharpen or resize.

Wow what a beautiful guy, his portrait fills the photo nicely, I love the top of the mailbox he's perched on too, it really adds to the photo's appeal. I think he could use just a touch more sharpness and contrast, but that's just personal preference really. Better than any bird photo I've done so far! Well done.
