[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I came across this beautiful male Great Blue Heron while walking through the wildlife park in Florida, USA, last month. He had a large branch in his bill for buildling his nest high up in the treetops from where he stood. Spooked by me, yet brazen enough to stand his ground he only dropped the branch but continued to eye me without fear. I took this opportunity to get some close-ups of this beautiful Heron's face. You can see he is almost in full breeding plumage as his lores are coloring up to a brilliant blue color...all part of the lure for females. The Herons have such an artful form and the grace of movement to go with it. The Herons living in Florida year round breed a lot earlier in the year than those that breed up north here due to the fact that they have to migrate back to the north when weather is warmer. The Floridian Herons have warm weather all year round.


I liked this pose, but there was something ( leaf perhaps) between me and the end of the bill. I did my best to clear it up a bit.

Lesley, this is a beautiful postrait of the heron. I like his eye. So vibrant and sharp, detailed. Wonderful capture.

This is really marvelous, Lesley. The "pose" of the bird is so very nice and unique--and dramatic. It almost tells a story.

The sharpness and details in this shot are amazing. Very good composition too. I like it.

Strong diagonal composition, great quality. As Radu said, nice yellow eyes :-)

Great mug shot with lovely diagonal and strong eye. The "something" in between you and the tip of his bill doesn't take away much sharpness, if you hadn't mentioned it I don't think I'd have noticed ;-)
