[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I do not yet have a macro lens, so I have to work a little harder to get these types of shots. I was down at our local nature center with good friend and fellow TN memeber Scott Hale. He found this guy right along the edge of the trail. The brown backround is the woodchip walking trail. Bright sunlight, but this was taken in the shade. I was happy with the quality of light in this one. I was to lazy to carry my tripod that far, so I had to handhold. Image Satbalization saves the day for me again.

This is caterpillar will one day be a Gray Comma Butterfly, also called a Hop Merchant Butterfly. A faily common butterly found throughout the Eastern United States.

Nice shot, Scott. Good exposure and composition. I guess the caterpillar's head must have been twisted towards you since it looks sharper than the rest of the body. Once you get a macro lens you're gonna miss the IS feature for sure. Did you have to crank up your ISO setting? It's not easy to tell with relatively low-noise camera such as 20D.

Scott,

A very well detailed pic of the subject you have posted. The Composition, POV, DOF, BG and lighting are all really great. TFS,
Sheriff

Hi Scott,
For a hand-held shot without a macro lens, fantastic! Beautiful detail, natural colours and BG is perfectly defocused, I wouldn't have though it was a walkway if you hadn't said. Nicely framed too. Caterpillars and Butterflies always remind me of the wonders of nature, and make me wonder where nature gets the inspiration from. Great shot!
Cheers,
Adrian

Hello Scott,
Very good shot considering the difficulties! The caterpillar is very interesting becaue of it's spikes and colours. I like the POV here, framing is good too though maybe a little bit tighter would work better. I don't really know.
Overall, well done on this one!

Hey Scott,

Hi Scott
This is a great 'macro' shot very well captured and presented considering that it was done without a macro lens and shot from the hand. It just shows how versatile today’s lenses really are however; I believe it says a lot about the photographers abilities as well.
The composition, colours, DOF & details, BG, and exposure were all done very well. Although, I do believe you could have improved on the DOF and f/stop if you were not that lazy though (chuckle).
Very well done my friend and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Scott,
Great colors, awesome sharpness and wonderfully composed. my shots of this turned out 'okay", I couldn't get the whole Caterpillar in focus. This one is sweet.
I like the facial hair this guy has. Great shot with or without a macro setting.
Good OOF BG.
This one may be ready for our gallery at the coffee shop.
Fine work.

Bonjour Scott
Elle est superbe cette prise de vue en Macro. Les couleurs sont merveilleuses, les détails et l'éclairage sont parfaits .
Félicitations et merci pour l'envoie.....JP

Excellent macro shot without macro lens.
Colors and composition are brilliant.
A slightly more F would have been better. I guess you didn't want a lower speed because of having no tripod.
