Near Denver (at Cherry Creek Park) I had the chance to take a picture of this nice killdeer! He was not afraid of me at all and let me approach him without difficulties at my great pleasure!

Hope you'll like it :-)

Description:
The most widespread and familiar of the American plovers, the Killdeer is a common bird in farmyards, fields, and parking lots. Although many species of birds pretend to have a broken wing to lure predators from their nest, the Killdeer is the one most commonly seen performing this distraction display.

Cool Facts:

- The Killdeer is one of the most successful shorebirds because of its fondness for human modified habitats and its willingness to nest close to people. Because they live so close to people, however, they are vulnerable to pesticide poisoning and collisions with cars and buildings.

- Gravel rooftops attract Killdeer for nesting, but can be dangerous places to raise a brood. Chicks may be unable to leave a roof because of high parapets and screened drain openings. When adults lure chicks off the roof, the chicks may die from the fall. However, some chicks have been observed leaping from a seven-story building and surviving.

- The broken-wing act used to lead predators from the nest would not keep a cow or horse from stepping on the eggs. To guard against large hoofed animals, the Killdeer uses a quite different display, fluffing itself up, displaying its tail over its head, and running at the beast to attempt to make it change its path.

Hi Michel
You have captured a lovely red-eyed beauty in a very nice composition. I love the little highlight in the eye and it is interesting how the brown feathers at the area of the rump (where it overlaps the black line and going into the white) seems to be transparent.
The low lying sun (not sure if it is early morning or late afternoon, probably the last) has rendered this photo with a lovely soft light and the colours are great. You have managed to show very fine details and excellent contrast especially in the brown feathers on the back. The BG compliments the bird and the exposure was well managed.
Great work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

This is an absolutely wonderful photo of the killdeer. I love the lighting, so nice of him to pose so perfectly for you. The blurry background is great, the shadows of his feet very nice. I love these birds and this has to be the best photograph I've EVER seen of one, excellent work.

Hi Michel, This is a lovely photo. Nice composition and lovely light.

I have reason to believe that you blurred the BG in an editing program and that it is not a natural "bokeh". If you have done so it is in contravention with the TOS of the site.

Hi Michel,
Beautiful bright colours and excellent light. Nice detail and a great note, a good contribution to TN. Again I have read the critiques and the BG looks perfectly natural to me. I think what may lead people astray is the sharp contrast between the rock and the BG. If I had to pick a nit I would say that the framing/crop is too tight around the bird, but merely my opinion. Great work.

Adrian
