If you have ever had the chance to watch any otters, it seems that they never stop moving for more than a second or two unless they are sleeping. Playing and eating are their top priorities. This female had a baby, but I could not get any good photos of the little one. When the keeper came to feed them, she put the baby back in the den before begging for a meal.

North American River Otter
Lutra canadensis

The North American River otter has an elongated tube-shaped body. The thick fur is dark reddish-brown to black on top, and grey to silver on the underside. A long muscular and tapered tail follows the body, which can be up to 1/3 of the total body length. . This is used for swimming and diving when in water. River otters can grow to an approximate length of 3-4 feet, and weigh from 15-25 pounds. Otters have four short, powerful legs and each foot is webbed. Because otters belong to the family that includes skunks, River otters have a very pungent scent that can be excreted from anal glands at the base of the tail.

The face of the River otter is covered with stiff whiskers that can be used to find prey in the water. The eyes are small and round. The ears and nose can be partially closed when underwater. In addition to its thick insulating fur, River otters can decrease their heart rate to conserve oxygen when in the water.

North American River otters can be found throughout North. America. They live primarily near rivers, lakes, streams, and marshes. They have been known to travel great distances over land to reach bodies of water. Although mostly aquatic, river otters love to play on land. This can be done during the hot summer months, or even in icy snow banks.

River Otters are carnivores. They eat a variety of shellfish, invertebrates, small mammals, amphibians, reptiles, eggs, and slow moving fish, such as carp and catfish. Occasionally they will even eat birds.

Hi Scott,
Excellent portrait, beautifully framed. I know what you mean about them not staying still, the're pretty hard to photograph. Nice detail and good DOF. There is a slightly bluish cast to this so I posted a workshop. Hope you don't mind me doing that.
Cheers,
Adrian

Very nice portrait.
I agree with workshop of Aido. I would have removed even more of the blue.

Very nice portrait of this cute character. This would be the one animal that I would choose to be. These sleek hyperactive jet propelled non-stop clowns always look like there having fun. :)

Wow, talk about sharp, Scott.
Excellent expression on this otter.
And yes, they are so much fun to watch...
and such a challenge to capture because they are so hyper.
You did a great job here.

Hi Scott, excellent portrait of this otter. I love the wet fur and the details are amazing and razor sharp. Great shot, well done and TFS.

:-) tomorrow

Lovely shot Scott,
Very good sharpness at the head and an excellent POV. Great details and composition as well. I hadn't really noticed a blue cast with this "wet" look, but I think that Adrians WS does give it a slightly more natural look..
Very well done!

Hi Scott,
excellent portrait, good composition, DOF and colours. I like it a lot. Interesting note also.

Scott,
I am suprised you got off such a good shot because this guy was running around like he was nuts! Good pose and nice exposure for the heavily shaded spot he was in. You got good catch light and the wet look. The shallow DOF is truely awesome. I love your notes, I learned alot by reading them.
Great job my friend,
Scott

Excellent capture. You can see the waxy fur which keeps them waterproofed. Have a great weekend, Scott!

Hi Scott,

Hi Scott,
beautiful portrait, wonderfully personal low POV. Tack sharp with a nicely blurred BG. Great capture!

Hi Scott...
A real cutie, and very well captured too!
That attentive looks tells she is alert, probably waiting for something to happen...
Well framed, very pleasant details... And those guys are probably never really dry!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Scott,
Now I am going to do it....Saw your photo severall times, but somehow didn't had the time to critique. I jsut recently saw this great documentary on BBC where they followed a family of sea otters. They are just such playfull animals and so quick. I really like their expression and you captured that excellently. I like the DOF and sharpness in this photo and the wet coat. Those ears do it for me.
TFS,
Niek

I like pose and composition. Great sharpness too. Lovely catchlight and details.

Hello Scott,
Very good portrait with good details, as usually you do. Its face is really lovely to me. Good and useful note.

Hi Scott.
Magnific portrait, excellent details contrast and composition, wonderful pose,is a beautiful portrait.

Hello Scott,
Lovely portrait! Picture has very good details and great POV. I just don't like colours too much because it seems there's a blue hue here. I think it would be good to make colours a little warmer bt changing white balance.
Overall, very well done on this one!

Great POV and details - very nice portrait!

What a wonderful shot Scott, I imagine you took many others trying to get this perfect portrait. The expectant look is so cute, points for the awwwwww factor alone. Well done.

Hi Scott
It looks like the holiday-boy is having too much fun and the postings have taken a back-seat (chuckle) so I just have to visit an earlier photo which I have missed.
These otters seem to be the mammalian equivalent to what guinea fowl is with birds. You got to have fast reflexes as the moment you think to press the shutter release, you were already too late. The head is somewhere else, but not in front of your lens anymore.
You have captured this sombre looking girl in a lovely portrait and you did an excellent job with the exposure as the shiny areas caused by the wetness could have resulted in a nightmare of OE areas. The details are sharp and the composition is great.
The only slight nit is not really your fault, since the ISO 400 did show a little bit of noise in the BG. Obviously you did not have much light to work with and was pushed to select the higher ISO value, but nothing that a little PP can not resolve. Adrian did a good job with the colour though.
Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Scott, This is not an easy shot to get as I know from trying to get it myself. I also want to catch them in an upright stance but they only seem to do it when begging and then all kinds of things obstruct your view when they are in an enclosure. I love the posture you've caught this otter in and your POV. It makes the otter stand out from the BG beautifully. BTW, I see nothing particularly wrong with the colours, technically this shot looks great to me. Perfect portrait, well done :)
