Greeting from Destin/Ft. Walton Beach, Florida. This is the result of Tropical Storm "Alberto" which was still several hundread miles to the South at this point. Heavy clouds, strong winds, and seas running 6-10 feet in height. This pushed tides much higher up on the beach. The storm did not develop into a hurricane, but was just on the edge when it turn inland about 150 miles to the South and went back East toward the Atlantic coast. The power of mother nature is always amazing to watch. I used the fishing pier to give a sense of scale. Sorry, I know it's a man made object, but the shots without it are not as dramatic.

This beach faces due south, and sunrise/sunset shots are not good here. The summer angle of the sun tracks behind the beach and over the bay. Will have to really work hard to find any good shots without buildings. It is a beautiful area, but way over developed as are most costal areas in Florida.

Hello Scott,
A very dramatic looking sky, amazing cloud forms.
Thankfully we dont see any of this here but its an amazing sight.
As you say, the pier gives sense of scale to it all.
A great capture.

Hi Scott,
Whoo, great shot. It's clear there is something going on there because the higher clouds look to be moving at 90° to the lower bank. And the blue sky in the distance is a real giveaway. Looks like the sea is picking up too, I used to live on the coast and loved watching the sea on stormy days, just beautiful.

Excellent detail from the nearest waves to the furthest clouds, soft and natural colours and nice framing, nice lines leading off to the left. I think the pier is fine as it's not the focal point and as you point out is only there to add scale.

Great work.
Cheers,
Adrian

Hi Scott
You have captured the mood of this threatening frontal system in a very dramatic fashion. The rolling clouds and the churned up ocean is clear indication of a serious storm buildup. It is also clearly seen in the colour of the water and the foam in the foreground.
The composition is great and the pier adds dimension & scale rather than distracts. The colours are fine, details are sharp to infinity, and the exposure was well managed showing excellent contrasts.
Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
PS. Hope the weather does not disrupt your holiday too much.

Gee, that is a fascinating shot, Scott. Yes, the pier adds to the drama. That magnificent cloud formation and the surf, and the overlapping shallow waves in front make it so interesting. Well exposed and composed. Thanks for sharing such a timely image with us.

What amazing clouds, their size is really well portrayed in this picture. We just don't seem to get anything on this scale in the UK...

The feel of a violent storm is palpable in this picture of the clouds and the rough sea, Scott. Mercifully the hurricane spared your Florida.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful picture of natural phenomenon in your part of the world.

Wow Scott, what a line-up of clouds rolling in. Well composed with the clouds over the pier and the waves breaking as they are. A few triangles to show as well. Good job, thank you
Janice

Scott,
The capture of these storm bands are great.
The man made object doesn't bother me one bit because it's definately the clouds are the subject. I like it also for the sense of scale. I can see some huge waves here too. I like the composition and the clarity of this shot. I think your exposure was dead-on.
I also like that you've included that wee bit of beach, it helps give it some depth. Very cool image Scott, it is a pleasure to see it.

Hi Scott,
A very amazing storm never saw where I live! Composition is very good too.

Wow! You caught a dramatic cloud formation Scott. The way the sun peeks through the clouds adds interesting textures, lines and colours. The waves with their whitecaps rolling toward the beach says... something is brewing. TFS Janice

Fabulous detail on the clouds, nicely presented..

The pier is an excellent inclusion IMO.
Clouds and seas are great and the pier break them and provides scale.
Some cool drama here.

I would say that is surf up! Nice shot, really like how dramatic the scene is, you can feel the storm. Good camera work.

Hi Scott...
This is a very special capture, and yes... You have some awesome weather over there!!
You depict the forces of nature very well here, both in the rolling waves as well as the threatning clouds... The black pier emphasis the seriousness of the situation!
Very well done!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Excellent POV, I'm glad you kept in the pier. I believe this pier was destroyed in Hurricane Ivan, I'm sure you saw much destruction while you were in Destin.

Hope you had a Bushwacker for me!
