[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
After the picture of the Cold Duck I thought I should share this picture with you. Temperatures have warmed to the mid 40s and aquatic birds have access to the water again. Evidence of melting can be seen in reflection of the mute swan Cygnus olor in the thin water layer on top of the ice. The mute swan is identifiable by the black lump barely visible at the top of the bill and the downward dip of the bill.
Image quality is not that good since I could not get close enough for the rather short lens on the 8080 (140 mm equivalent).
Cincinnati has fairly mild winters although below zero (Fahrenheit) temperatures and 18 inch snows are not unknown. This climate is mild enough for many birds to overwinter here - the Carolina Parakeet was once native to this area.

Hi Greg
As you said, some noise, but still a good rendition of the actual environment - I'm glad we never get this cold!
Some of us were out shooting yesterday as well, and the sun made the sweat run down in little rivulets down m back!

The qualite here is very good. Callie once wrote to me that the best zoom is ones feet :), but here you would literally have been on thin ice if you zoomed in more. The reflection of the swan is beautiful.

Very well done and thanks for posting. May you and your family have a wonderful and prosperous new year.

Here’s my evaluation of this photo, on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being best:
My Interest in Subject Matter = 8
Composition/Crop = 6
Clarity/Sharpness = 6
Color/Contrast = 7
Lighting = 7
Photographer’s Note = 10

I find the reflections on the ice distracting, so I might try cropping and/or cloning the top portion to eliminate them. Also might be nice to put swan off-center. I, too, can relate to short lens problems! Nice swan reflection.

Thanks for posting!
