I thought I'd say "Good-bye" to 2004 with this sassy fat and colorful female Northern Cardinal I captured yesterday. I went to a spot in the sanctuary that I nicknamed Cardinal Alley because no matter what time of year I am there I always find up to 8 male Cardinals and several females. This time of year I find our winter Sparrows ( migrants) in the bushes there as well. I will throw down some sunflower seeds on the snow and back off about 10 feet and sit in the snow and wait for the show to start...and start it does with sometimes 6-7 brilliant male Cardinals battling for pole position... the bushes are filled with their almost neon colored red. It is nice to see the muted beauty of the females , which on a second look are actually prettier than the males...just not as flashy. I sat in the snow for an hour being entertained by Cardinals, American Tree Sparrows, White-throated Sparrows, Tufted Titmice, Chickadees, Blue Jays , and Red Squirrels. I was a little wet and a little cold, but what a way to end the year!

Here's wishing you all the very best in the New Year...2005 here we come.

I think you're right, in her quiet way she's actually prettier than the males ;-)) Beautiful colours and light, great POV and a sweet pose.
I wish I could see some of your birds, but then I may be going to Marblehead, MA this summer, is that anywhere near you??
Happy New Year!

Great last in the 2004 post Lesley! As always cute and high quality.

All the very best to you in 2005 !!!

Great shot Lesley.
Very good colours, post and light.
Excellent work.

Happy New Year.

Hi Lesley. Lovely shot. I like it so much I did a ws, Hope you don't mind.
Happy New Year

Great composition on this one, Leslie - the diagonal of the branch and the off-center perch add to the overall interest of the shot. I do like the delicate colors of the female, but like the strong male colors equally well. Happy New Year.

A beautiful female cardinal. The back is impressive when the sun is shinning on it. I agree, the females can be prettier, only in the sun in my opinion.
Excelent composition and details.

Excellent photo Lesley.
Excellent sharpness and Point of view, great colours and composition.
The only problem in this picture is the Backround, the colors of the bg are the same colors of the bird.
But overall an excellent shot with great details.
Thanks for sharing, well done.

Great shot of one of my favorite birds! The depth of field and neutral background really make this little girl pop. Great job!

I am sure the males are there because of the females :) The sharpness is excellentand I like the composition.

All of the best for 2005.

Lesley happy newyear.
You have made a nice newyears photo for us. The bird is well taken, the sharpness is great and the dof is fantastic, the colours are super, very good job

Firstly, please allow me to wish you all the best for 2005, Lesley. I have been away for a while and missed some of your shots, I have a weeks vacation left and might drop off the radar again.

The cardinal you post are alway a pleasure to look at. This one even more so. The DOF is perfect... that beak comes out right through the screen. You are indeed blessed with such an abundance of these beautifull critters. Great shot!

Fantastic photo Lesley.
