Northern harrier Circus cyaneus

MEASUREMENTS: The Northern Harrier has a body length of 17 - 24 inches, a wingspan of 3 1/2 - 4 1/2 feet, and weighs 12 - 18 ounces. The female bird is quite a bit larger than the male.
HABITAT: Northern Harriers reside in North America, Europe, and Asia, and prefer open country, like grasslands, steppes, wetlands, meadows, cultivated areas, and tundra. Birds in the northern part of the range migrate south.
DIET: This hawk eats small mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, and carrion. Harriers hunt using a low, slow flight over the ground, then plunge onto their prey.
REPRODUCTION: Northern Harriers nest on the ground in thick grass, shrubbery, or other vegetation. The nest is a pile of sticks and grass. The female lays 3 - 6 eggs depending on the abundance of small rodents. The eggs are incubated 29 - 31 days, and the young hawks fledge 4 - 5 1/2 weeks later. Harriers mature in 2 - 3 years, but may be able to breed their first year.

WOW beautiful and difficult shot! Nice and sharp GOOD WORK!
Linda

Having watched my sister try and capture Osprey photos, I can appreciate how difficult this was to capture. You've done it well, so sharp and clear, the color of the sky is so vivid blue. I love how the sun is shining on his head so well highlighting his intense gaze, you can even see what color his eyes are, well done.

Great shot, Adam!!
Amzing focus on the yellow eye.
Well captured and managed.

Outstanding in-flight shot, Adam.
I know from first hand experience how hard that is. : P
Great POV. Seems you caught him fairly low in the sky?
Very sharp details with every wing and tail feather splayed out.
Wonderful blue Californian sky in the BG.
The underside is in the shadow as per the physics of light, but it is amazing how you caught the light right on the head like a spotlight.
Love the crispness of that intense stare even from that far away.
I kind of wish you hadn't cropped so tight. That great hawk could have used a bit more space to fly into.
A fantastic capture, Adam, and TFS. : )

Hi Adam,
Great in-flight shot, beautiful detail and perfect exposure, especially against that bright sky. I think the framing is a little tight, more leading space in front of the Harrier would be good. Great shot!

Adrian

Salut Adam, beautiful this difficult capture against the light. Excellent. Dan

Hi Adam,
Excellent in flight! The light quality here looks really nice for that time of day. Colors and tones are really spot on. Great detail throughout. I am a fan of frame filling shots. Some would say it needs more space on the left for him to fly to. Either way it would look good to me.
