[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A much over looked spieces of bird is the Sparrow family. Those who casually admire birds will never know the beauty and challenge of Sparrows. They have some gorgeous yet subtle markings, but the challenge is in the identifying as the many spieces can sometimes look very much like each. The other challenge is to photograph them because many of them can be very elusive hiding in underbrush and thick brambel. The song of many Sparrows can be sweet and clear and rival any Warbler. So be sure to never overlook the Sparrow hiding in the bushes!

This is the White-throated Sparrow and is one of my favorites. It arrives in October with the Dark-eyed Juncos and leaves the end of April to the beginning of May where it migrates back to Canada for breeding season. The White-throated is one of the larger and plumper of the Sparrow family and has a lovely clear song that can be heard during the winter as well as the summer. It is one of the easier ones to ID from it's beautiful white throat and the bright yellow spots above it's eye.

Because they hide in the shrubs I find it best to sit on the ground ( snow in this case) and try to be as low as possible for a decent POV.

Lesley, thank-you for posting as you said, the overlooked white throated sparrow in winter plumage. This is the bird often heard in movies that take place in the north.
The voice is recognizable as;
Sweet, sweet, Canada, Canada, Canada or Poor Sam Peobody, Peobody, Peobody.

An excelent capture and composition. He is very well detailed.

IMO, keep watch for the "white crown," often scene with these fellows. We have them come right up to our door in spring and fall.

the bird is could by us in Dutch a mus. By us we see this birds not so much anymore, because in our houses are not enough spots where they can lay there eggs. Very good photo, a strong pof and a fantastic dof, good colours too with a good note, good job

Beware of getting a cold from playng in the snow :) I like this composition and the curve of the twig is a nice touch. The sharpness is good and so is the eye contact.

Well worth the cold Bum Lesley the little brown birds are very surising when viewed close up as you say so many variationsin shade and colour.
The head is beautifully seen so crisp looking straight at you. nice one.

I think that the crop could be a little bit tighter, because the bright area in the background is disturbing. The dof is too small.

A very clear view of this little bird. I just found one in my back yard and couldn't identify it till "shyanni" came up with the correct ID.
