[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
My last post was a female ebony jewelwing damselfly - this is the male, taken two minutes later. The males were a bit more difficult to approach.
Damselflies are similar to dragonflies, but the adults can be differentiated by the fact that the wings of most damselflies are held along the body when at rest. Damselflies are also usually smaller, and weaker fliers than dragonflies, and their eyes are separated.
The Ebony Jewelwing, Calopteryx maculata, is a broad wing damselfly so named for the blue iridescence of the male's black wings (maculata means stain, mark, spot). This damsel prefers wooded wetland clearings and lays its eggs most commonly in slow shaded streams. The female oviposits alone in submerged vegetation while the male guards her; he may even guard multiple females. Ebony Jewelwings are “perchers”, spending a fair amount of time perching on vegetation.
