I'm afraid it's about time to see an eye doctor. Yesterday I was walking along a reservoir trying to see if I can get any birds to pose, when I noticed a fairly large insect sitting on a flower. Since I only had a telephoto with me I dropped the monopod to mark the place where I saw the fly, rushed to the car and got my other camera with a macro lens on it. When I came back I carefully approached the insect, got on my belly and then it flew away with... the flower. As you can see in the picture the fly was lucky to catch a butterfly for breakfast. So, I really have to get glasses... I'm not sure which exactly robber fly it is, so I would appreciate if somebody was able to ID it. Shot handheld with a flash covered with Sto-fen Omnibounce on a Kirk macro bracket.

Hi Mark,
Beautiful shot, with excellent POV and brilliant colours. The butterfly is a bit washed out but the fly is spot on. Well seen and captured
TFS
Mark

compliments for this magnificent photo.

Hello Mark

The butterfly looks very much like a Cabbage White (Pieris rapae) but the fly I have never seen before. There is a little burn on the butterfly (may be you should have compensated on the flash with 1/3 - 2/3) but apart from that it is a very good capture. Great sharpness and dof and very natural looking colours. All over a very good capture.

Great capture!
Poor butterfly!
Excellent on details and very good use of the DOF!
Very good POV too!
5* and TFS!

Hello Mark,
A nice snack for this robber fly!
The fly looks very much like an Asilus sericeus. Please compare:

Best regards,

hi mark
je ne connaissais pas cet insecte et grace a ce cliché je decouvre qu'il vaut mieux ne pas etre un papillon en sa presence!!
bonne photo et merci du partage;
laurent

Brilliant capture of this scene.
Composition is excellent. The robber fly looks so majestic, and the butterfly so pityful with the antennas in such a position.
The pic shows more than a dinner, but the all winning and loosing thing.
TFS
