[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a White-tailed Deer fawn that was born this past Spring and will be a yearling in a few months. It was with it's mama when I cam upon them in the woods. As soon as I saw them I dropped to my knees for a better POV and stayed very still. The wild deer at the sanctuary are wary, but not quite as skiddish as those who never see humans so I have found that as long as you stay very still and they get to stare at you for a few minutes and you don't move, they will go about their business. The doe crossed the path first and then this fawn had it's turn. It looked at me one lst time before walking across the wide path picking up speed as it went. It was almost as if the fawn started out feeling brave and then got a little nervous by the time it was to the other side and leaped into the woods to catch up with mama. I thought I would give you all a break from my bird photos today....

The White-tailed is probably the most familar and wide spread large mammal in North America. It prefers open forests near fields or meadows as they are grazers. They eat a wide variety of plant life from twigs and leaves to grasses, berries, acorns, and fungi. They can be quite a nuisance to farmers eating crops and flowers, but although I understand their frustration, I can't think of anything prettier than to wake up to one of these deer in your garden.

Great capture here. Self I had the plessure too photograph 2 deers. So I know that it is not easy. I like the composing shot, the colours are great, and the dof is fantastic, good note as well, great job

I understand that you didn't have much time to get right composition, but this one is really good. I would rather think that he was just stand there waiting for photo.

This is a Great Capture - I agree, the eyes really have it here - so this is a beautiful animal and you are very lucky to have captured them. :-)

This is a great composition! You exposed the whites very well and got excellent detail on the fawn. The rear hoof that is lifted adds to the impact of the shot.

Very cute and very much watching every movement of yours. Perfect handling of the light with no burning whatsoever and beautiful soft colours. Very good sharpness. Excellent capture Lesley and the attitude is great.

Beautiful photo of the white tail Lesley. The subject is sharp and although he has seen you, he seems unsure with his white tail up, he's ready to flee. I like the the slightly out of focus surounding giving your subject the primary place in the photograph. Nice wildlife photography, the mark of a very patient photographer.

I just can't stop looking at this wonderful picture. You really got him in an elegant pose. Watching you, unsure what to do. But you knew what to do. Clic. A superb cliché of a very gracious animal.

I missed that one, Lesley. Cute animal in a very elegant pose. With snow aroud, it's really a beutiful winter shot, corresponding so well to Christmas atmosphere. Lucky you to have these nearly sharing your breakfast ;-). A beautiful image.

Great composition and good colors. I love the contrast of the white snow and the brownish of the furcoat. I think the Deer noticed you as she looks a little surprised. Very well done! I like it.

A really lovely photo of a beautiful creature.
I like your note as well.
It's always good when there is a bit of written detail along with the image.
Those farmers should look at making their lands secure from the deer rather than blaming the deer for their own shortcomings.
We have the same mentality here in England, where farmers blame the fox for taking their chickens and newborn lambs.
They know about it for years yet they still blame everything on the natural predator because it is easier to point the finger at the fox than it is to care for their stock properly and make their chicken sheds secure.
