Black-chinned Hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri).
VERY HOT here in Texas right now, with temperatures reaching the century mark.

I had noticed that the hummers would feed from the flowers, even with the sprinkler on. So I set out to get an inflight with the water on, simulating rain in the shot..hopefully..did I say hopefully? :)

After no success with that, I turned off the water and watched some more..what I did observe was something I had never seen before.

This hummer came and layed down in the flower itself, in an apparent effort to cool itself. In this shot, the hummer appears to be drinking water from the flowers petals.

I'VE ATTACHED A SECOND SHOT, that better shows the hummer laying into the zinnia, "coolin' off".

I don't have the time lately to participate on TN as I would like. Hopefully things will get better before they get worse ;)

Thanx for lookin'

Hi Howard,
I can see it's not a butterfly and not a duck either.
What it is, is a great picture wiht lovely colours.
Very good details and almost perfect DOF, the subject bird is in focus and the BG nicely blurred.
Excellent work, mf.

The same in Spain, here it is also very hot.
You have captured a nice moment, very well documented. Both shots are great, but this one is a real beauty. Nothing to critic, just enjoy. Lights superb!

As usual a top quality shot from you Howard,
The details are nice, clear and sharp.
Good colours, lighting and exposure. POV is spot on.
Well composed and nicely framed.
I must admit I prefer the WS post, just because of the coulours and the Unusual pose of the relaxing Hummer.
Thanks for posting, enjoy the rest of the weekend my friend.

Superb shot, Howard!
This really is an interesting posture for this bird...and i have to agree with you with the reason: cooling. I can't think of anything alse. Very nice of you to post the other pictures in the WS...it gives a better perspective on the entire process.
Very, very well done! Lovely colors, splendid sharpness, great POV and BG.
A huge BRAVO and TFS
Horia

it may be not a butterfly, but perhaps a bumble-bee? *g*
wonderful sitting hummingbird, howard! :-)
and it is not an inflight...
excellent sharpness and composition with the beautiful flower as a resting place, amazing details, colors and light.
the WS photos are all great, too, good to see it in "action" in the flower.
perfect job & take care, thorsten.

Hi Howard!
Excellent moment and observation. Your little experiment led you to new discovery :-) Even birds are tired of heat and want to drink some fresh and free water, especially from so beautifull cup :-) I know what are you talking about - in Poland we've got Summer of the century with temperatures around 40C degrees.

Hello Howard, excllent colrs, bg, POV DOF Perfect details, graet work, Tfs Kyle

Hi Howard, nice picture(s). All are greats and the WS reveals that the little bird was really looking for some freshness.
Great light on the eye, nice BG and compo.

Hi Howard,
Apparently it's 103 in Dallas and I'm moving back in a couple of weeks. They could have waited until October to send me back :-)

Great shot and interesting behaviour from this Hummer, I don't know much about them so it's interesting to read. Great exposure and detail, the light looks strong and you've managed it well. Perfect DOF, a lovely shot.
Cheers,
Adrian

Nope not a butterfly - just a wonderful shot. This really is beautiful. Perfect POV, DOF, Colours and composition. All good

Sharpness is great. DOF perfect. Flower and bird are both sharp in a good composition. Blurred background is not distracting.

We have heard of your high temps over there. We're celebrating warm winter temps here too and in the sunny sheltered areas we are reaching 20C. No complaints from me!

Fantastic shot of this cute little lazy hummer who has decided to sit on its food instead of hovering over it. Very nice exposure on this one Howard. :)

Howard,
this hummingbird at rest looks very cute and charming, and very unusual. The story you tell us along with the other images from your workshop solve the puzzle. Very interesting to watch that tiny little bird drinking water and chilling off within the petals like in a little bath tub.
Great shots and contribution. Thank you!

Peter

Hello Howard,
An unusual view of a hummer and you've captured it very well.
Nice lighting, great colours and excellent DOF.
Top quality work,a pleasure to view.

TFS

Absolute perfection! carefully designed and finished. I am truly jealous, we have lots of them in my yard but could'nt get a descent shot.
Brilliant!

Hello Howard,
This is a lovely shot! Hummingbirds are probably the only birds that are way easier to capture in flight than in any other conditions. That's why the picture is very interesting. Apart from that it's very good technically and nicely framed.
VERY WELL DONE!

Hi Howard,
A beautifully composed image!
It isa amazing to see how the colour of the flower is reflected from the bird's chest...
Close-up work is top class, impressive!
