This beetle definitely does not want to make a mistake when sitting down for dinner. His two friends don't seem to have the same problem.
This is the flightless longhorned cactus beetle, Moneilema gigas, also known as the cholla beetle to Tucson residents. It feeds on cholla and prickly pear and will even totally consume a small saguaro seedling. The larva is a grub with a brown head that feeds on cholla stems and roots. |

Hi Greg, nice macro. It amazes me how these creatures navigate their tway hrough thorns and spikes. Nice details, lighting and colours. Well done and TFS.
Dean.
Hi Greg,
A prickley situation that he seems to be able to handle. Nice color saturation and sharp detail from the fill flash exposure. Nice DOF gets everything sharp with good OOF backround.
Well done!
Scott
Hello Greg!
As for me this is a member of family Cerambycidae, species very similar to European Dorcadion.
Interesting object in rather unusual situation - these are mainly epigeic beetles.
Best greetings,
Radomir
