On the North Coast of California (about 4 hours north of San Francisco) there is a wonderful beach called Bowling Ball Beach. As its name indicates, the beach is covered with big smooth round "bowling balls" lying next to straight rocky "lanes". These features are particularly visible at low tide.

The "lanes" are made of some volcanic formations that surround the beach. The "balls" come from disk-like concretions that have been "cut out" of the cliffs by erosion, then rounded and polished by the waves through the millenia (or however long it takes to sculpt and polish a boulder).
The boulders are said to date back to the Miocene period (5 to 7 million years old).

A concretion is a compact mass of mineral matter, usually spherical or disk-shaped, embedded in a host rock of a different composition. This hard, round mass of sedimentary rock cement is carried into place by ground water. Concretions, the most varied-shaped rocks of the sedimentary world, occur when a considerable amount of cementing material precipitates locally around a nucleus, often organic, such as a leaf, tooth, piece of shell or fossil. I am not a landscape photographer, but given the right light and the right lens, I can only imagine what some of you can do at this spectacular spot. : )

Interesting landscape. Great POV and composition. Lovely colours as well

Hi Manyee,
Did you know that coasties posted a photo with simular rocks but then located in New Zeland? It's the same ocean but miles away but created the same way. The rocks are just amazing to see. Your composition is perfect with the boulders on one site and the beach and cliffs on the other. This all creates a great depth. I also like the straight lanes, it almost looks like a car drove over the beach.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Manyee,
that's a beautiful place, I love the stones and the wonderful colours here.
I had to laugh about your headline, lovely.
Thanks and bye

A great image Manyee along with a really informative note. These formations are amazing and remind me somewhat of the Devils Marbles near Alice Springs.
I would have been tempted to photograph the boulders on their own, but the cliffs in the bg are the perfect back drop.
Great pov too.
Thanks for posting.

Ok...I thought I had been to every beach in Northern California. I don't remember this one. I made the connection right away with Pan's image. Isn't it odd you would both post them so close together? You chose a great composition for your shot. If you had just hung around for several more hours you may have gotten a shot like Stephen's with that wonderful light he is able to capture and we all envy.

Thanks for sharing
