Not a zoo here, my friends! A male caribou shading horns, a painfull process, complete with bleeding, a small price to pay for this young bull looking for status in the herd.
The reindeer, known as caribou when wild in North America, is an Arctic and Subarctic-dwelling deer (Rangifer tarandus). In 1952 reindeer were re-introduced to Scotland, as the natural stock had become extinct in the 10th century.
The weight of a female varies between 60 and 170 kg. In some subspecies of reindeer, the male is slightly larger; in others, the male can weigh up to 300 kg. Both sexes grow antlers, which (in the Scandinavian variety) for old males fall off in December, for young males in the spring and for females during the summer. The antlers typically have two separate groups of points (see image), a lower and upper. Domesticated animals (reindeer) are shorter-legged and heavier than their wild counterparts (caribou). The caribou of North America can run at speeds of almost 50 miles per hour and may travel 3,000 miles in a year. |

What impressive animals these Caribous!
Great acpture with the shading horns as well.
Excellent POV, lovely colors and beautiful light, but the best part is that the picture is not taken in a ZOO :)) Something natural...i love it!

Great portrait of this beautiful wild animal. I have tried to fing the meaning of shading in french but I guess those translators I use don't do the job right... Great details and nice catch. You were lucky to see him in his habitat. Well done, TFS,

Radu.- Muy buena foto de este Caribu, en esta epoca del aņo aqui en mi pais los ciervos con cuernos(Machos) tambien empiezan a tirar el forro de piel de sus cornamentas, es muy bonito verlos en esta epoca. Tu nota me parece muy buena.Luis52
Magnificent capture. Very useful note. What also needs to be said is that these animals are threatened by exploration, pipelines and such, interfering with their migratory routes.
