Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus)

Class: Insecta (insects)
Order: Lepidoptera (butterflies)
Family: Danaidae (Milkweed butterfly family)
Genus: Danaus
Species: Plexippus

The Monarch butterfly is an insect that goes on a special adventure called a migration.

Scientists from the United States, Canada and Mexico study the Monarch butterfly's migration each year

Scientists track the Monarch butterflies that are born in the late summer or early fall by putting tags on them. Later when the butterflies are found, the tag tells where to report the information.

This is how scientists track the butterflies during the migration adventure.

Each tag has a number and an address. The tag doesn't hurt the butterfly at all.

Monarch butterflies drink the nectar from flowering plants. They "taste" with their feet but drink with a special feeding tube called a proboscis.

Only the Monarch butterflies born in the fall migrate. They can't stay in the cold weather and must go south or die.

Scientist don't know everything about the Monarch butterfly migration yet.

Hi Stephan,
Superb close up shot of these two butterflies, both of them making a relatively symmetry compo with flower at center. Sharp, neat, and great details. Nice blurry BG. Greatly composed.

Salut Stephane,

Back to life? Belle performance avec cette marco de papillons. L'image est bien équilibrée, l'exposition et la netteté sont impécables. La profondeur de champs créé un beau flou à l'arrière.

Bref, une excellent macro. TFS.
