When the going gets tough, the tough get going ... It was Billy Ocean's hit from the eighties I had to think of when I saw these little shrubs holding on to life. They may look dead to you, but they are not. Spring came extraordinarily late to Alaska and even in late May most plants didn't have any leaves yet. You can also see that the riverbed is still almost completely dry because the snow didn't melt yet.

When we were in Alaska we exprienced some of the best weather, better than we could have hoped for. We only had 1 real dull morning and you're looking at a picture of that morning now. We had camped one night in Palmer (we stayed at the "Mountain View" camping) and we were going on our way from Seward to Valdez. Just outside Palmer, we took this picture. When we drove on to Valdez, the weather got better and better and we didn't experience any bad weather for the rest of our holiday.

Thanks for the wonderful travelogue, Pieter. This is a well composed shot, and does give us a taste of the overcast morning. Still you did a good job of capturing the majesty as well as the reality.

Hi Pieter,
If this was the worst weather you had then you were very fortunate on your vacation. A great shot, again showing us the expanse of wilderness in Alaska. A nice composition, perfect exposure and great light and colour. Great detail also, an excellent image. Great title too.
Cheers,
Adrian

Hi Pieter,
that's a shot full of silence and a peaceful atmosphere, I like this view so much.
I can relax while looking, wonderful, thanks

Hi Pieter,
It has been along time since I have been to Alaska. I am planning to get back soon, but it will have to wait another year or two. You amazing landscape shots continue to fuel that burning desire to return. The most beautiful unspoiled scenery. Another theme here is only the strong survive!
This is a superb landscape!
Scott

Hello Pieter, I really like this capture despite the weather, indeed it has a certain mood about it that makes it very different. Your composition is strong and your exposure consistent. Very good work mf, well done.

A fascinating and eerie landscape, Pieter.
I really like the mood created by the overcast weather.
The dried riverbed with its many streams of water going every which way, the mountains in the BF, the "dead" plants on the bluff... so many interesting things to look at. Great composition and lovely colors.
TFS. : )

Hello Pieter,
What an amazing landscape!
Very well composed with a creative use of foreground interest...
Beautiful mountain range in the background, and the dry riverbed is interesting...
It is a high tech quality image, with wonderful colours!
Greetings,
Pablo -

I have to say that I really like your series on Alaska and this one is no different. It shows a side of Alaska that we don't normally get shown.

It has a great depth to it.

Wonderful landscape Pieter,
You had the weather with you on this trip.
You've made good use of the grad filter. Fantastic composition.
This is a great post from you. Have a great week my friend.

Hoi Pieter,
Groeten,
Niek

Hi Pieter, the lighting here is good and I like the blue tones to the image too. Great landscape view, the riverbed looks very interesting. Your timing for your holiday sounds just perfect for you. TFS this special part of the world some of us will never get to see,
Janice

Hello Pieter, excllent colors, Bg,POV details, are great, perfect work, TFS Kyle

Fantastic scene, so barren looking. Really well balanced composition. The muted blue colours on the mountains in the distance are a nice contrast to the sandy colours in the foreground. Maybe a tiny bit oversharpened? Maybe it's just me?

Great light on a forbidding landscape, Pieter! I love the composition with the riverbank on the left and the wonderful mountains in the background. I am so envious of your trip to Alaska, what a spectacular place it must be!

Hope you have a great upcoming week,

Alli

Groet reina

Hi Pieter,
what a marvellous depth and atmospherical beauty you have captured in this panorama of a river slowly meandering out of the cold and the dark! Very subtle colours, I like the cool hues of blue in contrast to the tender and warm colours of morning sunlight in the foreground very much.
With thanks, and best regards,
Peter

Hello Pieter,
Very nostalgic landscape. Very subtle colours and light with that "distance hue". Good use of the foreground and nice details in clouds.
TFS and all the best!

This places must be breathtaking. Nature gets really radical in this latitudes.
The picture is very plesant and natural. As always you include a nice read which brings me closer to the photo. You always make your posts interesting, thanks MF.

Pieter, I do remember Ocean's hit. Great title.

I like the picture. An excellent composition to show us this beautiful landscape.

I like sharpness too.

Well done Pieter, great quality.

I like the level of FG detail,
exposure, POV, and overall composition. The dry riverbed with it's "mini" rivers adds an interesting pattern, while leading the eye through the depth of the frame to the distant mountain range.
So let's get going..tough guy. ;)

desolate yet inviting feeling in this one. DOF works for me as I have lots to take in. I love the harmonious geometry of it all with the various lines and curves. The bend of the river bed takes my eyes through the photo and back again. A very pleasing scene.
Well done.
