[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
On this picture you see a cruiseboat dwarfed by Holgate Glacier. The boat could easily carry 200 persons and is two stories high. It gives you an idea about the sheer size of the glacier. When we were looking at Holgate it shed icebergs the size of small cars, which landed in the water with a big splash.

They may be rapidly retreating due to global warming but Alaska's glaciers are still one of it's most popular attractions. These rivers of ice form when snowfall in the mountains exceeds the rate of melting. As the snow builds up, it becomes a solid cap of ice that, because of gravity, flows like a frozen river. Because glacial ice absorbs all the colors of the spectrum except blue, which it reflects, glacial ice often appears blue. The more overcast the day, the bluer glacial ice appears. If it's raining on the day you are to view a glacier, rejoice; the blues will never be more intense.

Alaska is one of the few places in the world where active glaciation occurs on such a grand scale. There are an estimated 100,000 glaciers in Alaska, covering 29,000 sq miles, or 5% of the state, containing three-quarters of all it's fresh water.

Holgate glacier is a tidewater glacier, as it extends into the sea.

The Global warm up really is a problem and Alaska is one of the first places in the world where you can notice it for real. The 100,000 glaciers in Alaska are rapidly retreating and we chatted to a local girl who told us many smaller glaciers she had visited in her youth were now gone. Also the permafrost in the far North of Alaska is melting. All this is happening and the world does nothing ... Sometimes it makes me really sad.

The cruiseboat makes us see how large the glacier really is Pieter. And what a lot of glaciers Alaska has too... Yes, I read your notes. I like how you haven't zoomed in on this shot, and we get to see the whole surrounding area. Very interesting, thanks friend,
Janice

Bonjour Pieter!

Vraiment impressionnant comme endroit. Le bateau est très petit comparativement à l'amat de glace.

Merci.

Wow ! What an impressive shot that you have well done ! The boat seems small under the powerful iced nature. I also appreciate the complementary note... Congratulations Pieter and Sandra, thanks for sharing.

Superb landscape.
I agree with the fact that without that boat we wouldn't have any sense of the hugeness of this glacier.

Great picture.

Cheers, Petru

Hi Pieter

Wow... magnificent. Seeing the boat in the shot gives a good indication of the size of the Glacier. What a magical sight. Thanks for sharing this beautiful part of the world!

Hi Pieter,
An excellent shot. I am glad you have the boat in there to give a nice sense of scale. A very difficut exposure that you handled very well. I'll bet that was a bright scene. Great Detail and sense of depth here.
Scott

It is always the scale of the glaciers that gets me. they are so big.

nicely divided into 3rds and the boat helps with the size.

I was thinking that a grey grad filter might have helped here as well.

Hello Pieter, excllent work, great details, perfect colors, excllent POV and framing, Nice work, TFS Kyle

Hello Pieter,

Wow! Incredible shot! It took me a second look to see the boat on the picture and to realise how huge the glaceir is! Excellent pov and composition. Maybe the exposition is a little to high: I think it would be better at -2/3 or -1. It is a great picture and TFS!

Hi Pieter!

Great, very interesting note my friend! At first sight I didn't notice this boat - it looks really small in comparision to mass of ice. Cold picture ;-) White/blue ice made great compo with dark rocks. I wonder how it would looks like with blue sky. Thanks for sharing with us another great place from your Alaskan trip!

Hoi Pieter,
Nooit gedacht dat ze zo groot waren. De boot ziet er uit als een bootje waarmee ik vroeger in bad speelde. de verdeling is pefect, en ik ben het eens met Emma over het filter. Het detail in deze foto is bijzonder.
Groeten,
Niek

Hi Pieter,

Hello Pieter,
Wonderful place and capture.I liked POV,details and composition a lot.I think wider angle view with your 17-40mm f4 would be also magnificent here.Excellent work!

I love glaciers and you certainly have captured the blue in the ice here. Nice shot

PT all out today

Hello Pieter, powerful scene when you grasp the scale with the ship. You are certainly well traveled mf. I would love to see these places hopefully in the next few years. Very well done.

Hi Pieter,
This was not an easy shot I guess. So much white! :) You managed this lightning very well with excellent DOF and POV. I like those details there. Everything is clear and sharp! Well done with excellent notes. Thanks,
Claudine

Pieter,

I agree, what a marvel. I have been on a few in the Girdwood, Portage area. I walked on Portage Glacier once in the winter, 25 years ago. I saw 3 years ago that it had retreated all the way "around" the corner.

Hi, Pieter.
Beautiful landscape again. Powerful scene. Gret depth. I think circular polarizer together with grad ND, will help here in exposure to bring better out water and sky.

Hi Pieter,
Now that's a Glacier! Quite amazing and the boat gives a great sense of scale. I agree with your note, people sit by and do nothing, and as long as many individuals can continue to make money, live comfortably etc they will continue to do nothing. Too many people think the problem is somebody elses.
Regards,
Adrian

I really love the blue colour of the ice in the glacier. It always amazes me.
Having the boat in the photo is very useful, it gives us a sense of scale. Getting the right exposure must have been very tricky here. I'm assuming you have no clipped whites, but I think my eyes would have told me to go down just a touch, maybe 1/3 stop.

A wonderful shot. Including the cruise ship really makes it amazing, though. You get a grasp of staggering scale in one glance. I think Maslow talked about the ability to feel both powerful and insignificant at the same time, though I don't think it is that rare for people who have been on the top of a mountain. This shot conveys that feeling, too.
Mike

Very well done Pieter.
Very good exposure, detail, and POV. The large vessel at the base of the glacier gives the viewer a quick impression of the magnitude here :)

Hallo Pieter,
Natuurlijk heeft het 'bootje' niets te maken met de natuur.
Het biedt wel een uitstekende referentie om een idee te krijgen van de omvang van de glacier.
Goede foto met leuke compo. Leerrijke inhoud.
Bedankt
Annick

Pieter, how big everything is here indeed.

Great note to give us an idea of the huge glacier. Besides, excellent exposure, despite the whites all around. I enjoy composition too.

WOW !!! you leave me speechless with this one.
From DOF to composition I feel the harsh cold and the crisp air surounding me. Excellent photo. Congrats on a shot well done.
