I chased this guy for quite some time hoping to get him to land on some beautiful flower to make that classic shot. NO SUCH LUCK...He would fly around so fast it would make me dizzy trying to follow him. He would always land on the underside of leaves. He would blend in so well I really had to look hard to find him even when he was really out in plain sight. So I finally caught an opening and got a few decent shots. The strong back lighting gives a nice halo effect around the wings. A fill flash exposure set to -1 1/3 seems to have kept it looking pretty natural. This guy really made me work hard for this shot. Not the classic butterfly on the flower, but this is how they blend in to hid from prey.

Common Sulpher - Colias philodice

Color: Pale yellow wings with black borders and one black dot on the forewings (top pair of wings). The greenish bottom pair of wings have a row of irregularly shaped dots in burgundy.

Size: 1½ -2 inches between wing tips.

Habitat: Open areas such as recreational grounds, pastures and parks.

Flights: Several from March to December.

Host plants: Clover, alfa-alfa and other legumes.

Nectar sources: Dandilion, golenrod, clover, tickseed, phlox, milkweed, dogbane and hibiscus.

Special Note: Sometimes the Orange Sulpher and the Common or Clouded Sulpher interbreeds and the resulting hybrid butterfly has orange wing markings.

Hi Scott!

Fantastic macro. Quality is perfect, every detail is sharp and well visible. But most of all I like composition. Butterfly has got almost the same colour like leaf and looks superb. Spots of sunlight on BG leaf are also excellent.

Hi Scott,
You will get it someday!
Great shot, nicely capturing this green butterfly.
Sharp, nice details and neat image.
Well composed picture.
Nice blurry BG.
Have a great weekend. Enjoy life. Don't work too hard.

Hi Scott,
I think it's amazing how much these resemble leaves, it's a real wonder of nature that something can be this well camouflaged. It's a great shot, excellent exposure against that bright light in the background. Beautiful tight crop with excellent detail, great colours. great shot.
Cheers,
Adrian

Hello Scott,
It is a strange but interesting effect from an image where all elements are different shades of green...
Well composed image, with good details... The butterfly looks exactly like the leaf it is sitting on!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Scott,
For me, you had luck because this is a beatiful picture! I love those colors, composition and details. Paterns on its wings are very nice! Well done and TSF,

Una excelente macro en sombras con muy buena nitidez y colorido, que muestra el nivel de mimetismo que puede alcanzar la mariposa.
Atinado encuadre bien apretado (como personalmente me agradan).
Saludos... Ricardo

excellent macro in shades with very good clarity and coloring that shows the mimicry level that he can to reach the butterfly.
Accurate very tight framing (as personally I please me). Greetings... Ricardo

Hi Scott, a great shot of this Common Sulpher. Your hard work certainly did pay off. I like the way it is blending in with the underside of the leaf. Good colours and good use of the fill flash to give great exposure. Good textures and back lighting. First class work, TFS.
Dean.

Great shot Scott,
Difficult conditions with the shade & bright BG but you pulled it off well mf. Very good DOF and detail.

this is another great butterfly shot from you.
Great sharpness, details and very nice colours. Great POV and composition too. Thank you.

Great capture, it's hard to tell where the leaf begins and the butterfly ends! Our sulphur butterflies are bright yellow and fly in ridiculous patterns that are impossible to follow. Excellent post, Scott!

HEllo Scott,
very nice capture, the butterfly almost blends in with the BG, but the sharpness on the subject and the OOF BG lets it stand out very well. THis is a very beautiful macro composition.

Incroyable! Scott.
Merci de nous présenter ce beau specimen avec une note très intéressante. Il vous a fait travailler fort, mais le résultat est superbe.
La couleur pâle à l'arrière plan fait ressortir le sujet principal. Félicitations.

JN.

Scott,
I like the way you filled the frame here. He matches the leaf so perfectly. In fact, even his markings look like holes in a leaf. Cool backlit halo effect here. Great job,
Scott

Scott,
I like this photo...especially the butterfly part due to the sharpness and 'print' on the wings. It would be a nice decoration for an designer's object.
Well done
TFS
Annick
