Another day in the park. This day we decided to stay closer to the cabin and visited the Two Medicine area. First stop was of course the gas station to get gas and Mountain Dew. Second stop was the falls.

The story behind this falls is what most interest me:

Running Eagle Falls is a place of beauty and sacred spirituality in Glacier National Park. Nicknamed, Trick Falls, Running Eagle Falls actually appears to be two waterfalls. After the snow melts in the spring, the upper falls rages above the lower falls. Later in the summer, the upper falls dries up and only the lower falls continues to flow, hence the name, Trick Falls.

Running Eagle Falls was named after a female Blackfeet warrior who used the area for vision quests. The legend tells of a brave indian girl named Weasel Woman whose parents died when she was young. Refusing to break up her siblings, and rejecting all of her suitors, Weasel Woman decided to take on the male role of the household. She provided for her brothers and sisters by hunting. To take care of the female chores, Weasel Woman brought in a widowed woman of her tribe to look after the children and cook.

Weasel Woman had her first experience as a warrior when Crow Indians raided her Blackfeet village and stole several horses. In response, Weasel Woman broke into the Crow camp and returned 6 of the best horses to her village. She was also responsible for killing several enemy warriors who were trailing her party.

When Weasel Woman returned, the men put up a Medicine Lodge and allowed Weasel Woman to tell her story. From then on, Weasel Woman, became known as Pita Omarkan, or Running Eagle, a named that once belonged to a great chief. She has been the only Blackfeet woman to bear a man's name.

Running Eagle went on to participate in many successful raids and led many war parties. She became a member of the Braves Society of young warriors. However, Running Eagle met her match during a battle with the Flatheads, and was clubbed from the behind and killed.

The area where Running Eagle received a vision that empowered her with the knowledge to become a successful warrior, now bears her name. Running Eagle Falls continues to fascinate and awe thousands of visitors a year.

I don't have much else to say but that it was a cloudy day.

Indeed a trick set of falls. How interesting, Niek. I have never seen anything like that before. I also think the cloudy day worked to your benefit, for I love the exposure on this shot. The light on the water is beautiful. The colors are well saturated and the composition is very pleasing. I enjoyed the story in your notes very much.

Hi Niek,
This is a great post, the note is really interesting. I love the names of all of these places, I've read a lot of Native American history so it's nice to see these places. It's a nice shot, a beautiful place. I like the composition and the way you've included more foreground, I would have done it differently and not got as good a result as this. Nice detail, great colour, perhaps just a little OE on the water but a minor point. A great post, thanks for sharing.
Cheers,
Adrian

Well captured Niek,
The details are nice, clear and sharp.
superb colours, lighting and exposure. Well composed.
Thanks for posting, have a great week.

Well now you've seen one I missed. I know right where it is but for some reason we didn't take that trail.
This is a really nice picture Niek. I'm glad you were there when both falls were flowing. Quite impressive. I like your off center composition and the sharpness of the rocks and foliage. Excellent exposure. Nice work.

I know that ManYee enjoyed your note. Through the years she has done a LOT of curriculum centered on various ethnic folktales and now she teaches lots about Native Americans.

Hello Niek,
A nicely composed waterfall image!
Interesting to see how the water reflects in itself..!
Couldn't quite figure out the image at first, but the note is most useful!
Greetings,

Nice capture, Niek. A well done shot with all the technical elements in place -- composition, exposure, and focus. I would have prefered a bit more light, too, but that wasn't under your control.

P.S. We drove right by the trailhead two days ago, but the kids had already had two days of hiking so we opted to kayak on Two Medicine lake instead. It was a beautiful quiet morning and that was wonderful, too.

HI Niek,
what a wonderful waterfall, coming two times out of the rock. A romantic place, I guess.
Thanks and bye

Hi Niek,
This is a very interesting post, both for the technical and historical issues. I think this is well composed and balanced. Great POV and DOF too. It is just too bad that there was no sun that day but we have this feeling of complete wilderness and we can imagine Weasel Woman's story very well :) I wish I can go there sometimes. TFS,
Claudine

Hoi Niek,
