Caribbean Flamingo (Phoeniccopterus ruber)

FAMILY: Phoenicopteridae

LOCATION: The Caribbean islands, northern South America, Galapagos Islands, east Africa, and southern Asia.

HABITAT: Shallow, salty flats.

COLOUR: It is a deep scarlet red on head, neck, breast and wings with lighter shades of scarlet and pink on the back and under the tail. The Primary and Secondary feathers are black and make a striking contrast to the vivid colors of the rest of the bird. Black patch at end of the bill.

SIZE: 120-150cm. (4-5ft.)

DIET: The small crustaceans and algae that the flamingoes eat contain carotinoid and other natural pigments that are processed in the body and deposited in the growing feathers. These provide the birds with their bright pink coloration.

CALLS: Squawking and trumpeting.

PREDATORS: Birds of prey, hyenas & large cats.

HABITS: Live in large colonies, sometimes numbering many thousands.

SEX DIFFERENCE: Not obvious.

REPRODUCTION: In the wild breeding only takes place in years where the rainfall is adequate and food sources abundant. It has been estimated that taking into account bad weather, predation, food resources, natural disasters and deaths, it may take an average pair of flamingoes 25 years or more to produce enough offspring to replace themselves. One egg laid is incubated for about 30 days. Chicks are ready to leave the nest at 2.5 months of age.

LIFESPAN: 40 years.

Hi Stephan

Great eye contact. Love the plumage colours. Very vibrant. Nice work. TFS.

Hi Stephan,
Nice close up picture of this pink flaminggo. Sharp and neat. I wonder why flaminggo seems always sleepy? Nice tight cropping, makes a good compo. Simple framing looks nice.

Hi Stephan,
Oh Yeah, I like this one...Amazing color saturation..Very beautiful.Nice sharp detail in the plumage. What makes the shot for me is the extreme closeup and tight crop. I love shots like that when they are done well. And this is done well! Very cool ;-}
