Delicate Arch is a freestanding natural arch located in Arches National Park near Moab, Utah.

It is the most widely-recognized landmark in Arches National Park and is depicted on both Utah license plates and a postage stamp commemorating Utah's centennial anniversary of statehood in 1996. The Olympic torch relay for the 2002 Winter Olympics passed through the arch.

Because of its distinctive shape, the arch was known as "the Chaps" and "the Schoolmarm's Bloomers" by local cowboys. It was given its current name by Frank Beckwith, leader of the Arches National Monument Scientific Expedition, who explored the area in the winter of 1933-1934. (The story that the names of Delicate Arch and Landscape Arch were inadvertently exchanged due to a signage mixup by the National Park Service is false.)

The arch played no part in the original designation of the area as a U.S. National Monument in 1929, and was not included within the original boundaries; it was added when the monument was enlarged in 1938. In the 1950s, the National Park Service investigated the possibility of applying a clear plastic coating to the arch to protect it from further erosion and eventual destruction. The idea was ultimately abandoned as impractical and contrary to NPS principles.

During the summer months, White-throated Swifts (Aeronautes saxatalis) nest in the top of the arch, sometimes darting to and fro with great rapidity. [I WILL POST A PICTURE OF A MOTHER FEEDING BABY IN THE FOLLOWING DAYS]

It is truly a charisma of nature which you have used effectively here to frame a charming landscape within it, Stephen. The arch as frame and the view within it stand distinctly apart but make a fine composition.
Your note on the Arches National Park is very informative and highlights the significance of this particular one.
TFS.

Great landscape from one of the best natural site.
Great compo and light.

Andrea

Hi Sthephan,
Beautiful natural framing. Great eye for the details and the POV. The earthtone colors are beautiful and there is so much details visable. Maybe this photo doesn't even need a frame, but now you have a view within a view.
TFS,
Niek

This is an interesting and original take on this famous landmark. I like how you have focused more on the land that can be seen through the arch, while using the arch as a frame. Very creative, and nicely captured.

This is a totally new and creative POV on one of the most often photographed places in the west. I quite like it. The varying contrast in texture of the far landscape adds interest. I would guess the lighting could be even more dramatic if shot early or late in the day.

A very creative shot.
