Common Birdwing
Troides helena cerberus

This spectacular "birdwing" has a wingspan which equals and sometimes exceeds that of the famous Rajah Brooke's Birdwing. It is essentially a jungle species but is drawn to cultivated areas where its host plant, Aristolochia tagala, can be found.
The black and yellow colouring is a warning pattern to predators that it is distasteful. The Common Birdwing attains a wingspan of 13 - 15 cm for the males and up to 18 cm for the females. This species is highly sought after by collectors and is a CITES-listed species in Malaysia and Singapore.

The female, which is the bigger of the two, has a series of black spots on the hindwing.

This photo was taken at the Butterfly Garden at Marine World.

Hi ManYee
A very interesting capture of this butterfly that you took at the Butterfly Garden at Marine World. This combination makes me wonder if they breed the butterflies as live food for the fish. It almost sounds like the punk-rocker that worked at the balloon factory. It did not take long to figure out why so many leaking balloons were manufactured every time he was on shift. A bad joke of something that don't seem to fit together, but I am sure you won't complain as long as you get to shoot such lovely insects.
The composition is great and the colours are splendid. Just a pity it did not show us more of that colourful back wings. You managed the exposure very well in order to capture some excellent contrasts on the black wings.
Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
