The Postman

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
I think that this is a variety of the Amazon postman, Helconious melpomene, but there is such variation in the species that it's difficult to tell.
As with a number of brightly colored species, the Amazon postman relies on its larvae ingesting plant based toxins, in this case from the passionflower vine, to provide a defense againt predators. Upon hatching, the caterpillar feasts on leaves of the passionflower vine and develops immunity to the plant’s toxins. As an adult, it also feeds on the pollen and nectar of the passionflower vine.
Cropped, rotated and saturation adjusted. Taken with monopod at the Cincinnati Zoo. |

Beautiful sharp shot of this brilliantly coloured Heliconius against the gentle green background. I like the angle in the composition.

What a beautiful butterfly, Greg.
The colors are amazing.
Sharp details and nice composition.
It comes up very bright on my screen, which makes the colors a bit washed out. I did a workshop to see if I could tone the light down. Hope you like it.
