Great Blue Heron
Ardea herodias
Description:
39-52" (99-132 cm). W. 5'10" (1.8 m). A common large, mainly grayish heron with a pale or yellowish bill. Often mistaken for a Sandhill Crane, but flies with its neck folded, not extended like that of a crane. In southern Florida an all-white form, "Great White Heron," differs from Great Egret in being larger, with greenish-yellow rather than black legs.
Habitat:
Lakes, ponds, rivers, and marshes.
Nesting:
3-7 pale greenish-blue eggs placed on a shallow platform of sticks lined with finer material, usually in a tree but sometimes on the ground or concealed in a reedbed. Nests in colonies.
Range:
Breeds locally from coastal Alaska, south-central Canada, and Nova Scotia south to Mexico and West Indies. Winters as far north as southern Alaska, central United States, and southern New England. Also in Galapagos Islands.
Voice:
A harsh squawk.

Perfect!!!

Hi Cecilia,
Awesome shot on this Great Blue Heron. The light was soft and shadowless here. Great color saturation and very sharp detail. The pose on the large valve is very fitting. Great OOF backround. Love it!

Outstanding! The exposure is perfect, even around the white area around the eye. Focus is razor sharp and colors are perfect!

Hi Cecilia,
Great composition and excellent sharpness. The blurry background made this Great blue heron stand out. Very well done picture.

What a beautiful composition, Cecilia.
The heron is well presented with sharp details and beautiful colors,
and in an excellent POV, standing on the wheel. The softness of the BG, in texture and colors, really makes the bird stand out.

Hi Cecilia

What an interesting place for such an animal...:)...but it sure gave you an excellent POV and absolutely no distracting vegetation in the FG :)
The composition here is more than excellent and the sharpness is simply perfect.
Also the saturation of the colors is at the highest level, the tones are wonderful and the presentation very nice.

Bravo and TFS

Hello Cecilia,

What a beautiful capture you have here! Usually I prefere not to see any human made object in a wildlife photo but for this time I'll make an exception. You captured the heron so beautifully that I don't mind the metal wheel at all. Even from a chromatic point of view it blends so nicely into the composition that it doesn't distract at all. I love your composition. You made this picture look very interesting by placing the subject off centre, just about one third from the left edge of the frame. I also appreciate your POV. You positioned the camera at the subject's eye level, thus placing the viewer into the scene. Very well done here!
The isolation of the subject from the background was also done very skillfully by means of camera settings (DOF). You've created a nice, defocused background which compliments your composition. Exposure and sharpness are perfect, with no detail loss on the subject.
As far as it concerns the colors, I love the soft tones you've captured. Actually I think a picture with less colors but rich in color tones has a stronger impact than a very colorful one. You exploited this very cleverly. The educative note completes your post. Thank you for sharing your photo with us and compliments for your work!
There's one more thing I would like to add. This high quality picture stirred my interest for your work so I took a visit to your portofolio. I discovered a great photo gallery with beautiful pictures. You present them in a very artistic way by consistently using simple, classic frames with white passepartout. I found this very appealing and would like to congratulate you.

With Friendly Regards,
Eddie

Hello Cecilia!
I like a lot this photo of the heron.
You show us the whole bird thanks to the POV used, and isolated pretty well from the background with the right DOF.
I thought at the begining it would be better crop down to eliminate the object, but that would be croped also the legs, so I already believe this is a good composition.
Congratulations and regards,
JM

Hi Cecilia

Wonderful capture of this elegant Blue Heron, the composition is up to your usuall high standard, with a great POV and I do like the pose with the Heron resting on the old rusty valve, the details are excellent and the Bird is nicely isolated from the BG, wonderful colours too.
My office at work is next to a River and almost everday a Blue Heron sits on a post so I watch it all day but alas when I finish work it has already flown so still no shot for me.

TFS Hilary :o)

Simplemente estupendo. Buenos detalles, con una nitidez y un bg fantásticos. Muy buena captura Cecilia.
Saludos amiga.

Hi Cecilia

I just love this photo of the big bird sitting on top of the valve. Interestingly though, since you mention the fact that this bird is easily confused with the Sandhill crane, but if this Heron was a "Crane" it would have been an amazing coincidence. In my mother tongue (Afrikaans) a crane is called a "Kraanvoël". "Voël" means bird while a "kraan" can also refer to a valve. So directly translated it would have been a "Valve bird" sitting on top of a valve.

The composition and POV are great and the OOF backdrop just gives enough detail of the grass to create a rather interesting BG. The sharp details, splendid colours, and magnificent exposure on the bird are excellent.

Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hello Cecilia
This is so beautiful! Your image is very sharp with excellent POV and DOF. The Heron is giving you a nice pose and angle. The background colours are a nice compliment and contrast to this beautiful Heron.
TFS Janice

Bonsoir Cecilia
Votre galerie est un vrai régal pour les yeux ! Je m'arrête un instant sur celle-ci pour l'originalité du perchoir de ce héron. Bravo !
Antoine.
