Bald Eagle - Haliaeetus leucocephalus

This birds name is Patriot

OK, I know there have been alot of great Bald Eagle shots posted here, but I just wanted to post this one I took today. I was pretty happy with the results. I will skip all the scientific stuff and just explain how I got the shot.

This was a captive eagle that was on display inside at the Great River Museum, Alton, Illinois. The museum is at the lock and dam on the Mississippi River. This is a prime eagle nesting and feeding area in the winter. The eagles come down from up north to feed in the open water. The river does not freeze shut here due to the river traffic thru the lock and dam. Today, I counted about 15 in the trees in the area. To far to reach with my camera, :( but enjoyable to watch them soar in the skies :)

This was shot indoors in a conference room with horrible florescent lighting that was dim. No room for tripod, and he was on a perch at ground level. So I got down below eye level and used a blue colored dry erase board on the wall as a backround. I had to boost ISO to 800, and I thank my lucky stars I have an image stabalized lens. I used direct flash set to -2/3 exposure to give it natural looking light. Since it was shot in RAW format, I was able to further adjust the color tremperature to correct any blue cast. The usual adjustments in photoshop to levels and curves. A slight +8 to Saturation on the Yellow Channel to make his beak look better. Smart sharpening, and then a trip thru Neat Image Pro to reduce the noise. A few more sharpening tweaks, and then sized for posting.

Check the workshop posting of the intimidating stare he gave me when I first started. I like this pose slightly better, but I think that one is really spooky.

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott

Magnificent portrait with amazing details and stunning colours my friend. You managed to secure this radiant eagle in a great composition with a remarkable BG and perfect exposure.

Shucks, if I look at all the hassles you had to overcome then this shot even moves up another notch or two. ISO800, 1/40 shutter speed, hand held, indoors, florescent lighting, BG boards, ground level perch, grass roots crawling (or is that floor board), and so the list goes on. Excellent PP obviously also helped to save the shot.

Great work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Scott,

A great job, especially considering the conditions. It was obviously a captive bird, but I would never have guessed that it was an indoor shot.

You got great detail in the eye and especially in the white feathers which can be difficult.

Hi Scott.
My congratulations with such nice portrait and perfectly described technique of shooting. It is very important for us.

I like both pictures. My small experience of shooting of eagles shows, that there are many fine positions of these birds and what of them is better, to tell very difficultly.
Your POV is excellent as well as the reproduction of all features of this majestic bird (expression, colours, feathers, etc). TFS and best wishes.
Alexei.

Very nice portrait shot of this beautiful majestic raptor. The blue backdrop worked out nicely. I dont really like to shoot anything with florescent lighting being the ambient source, I believe it is at 4000 degrees kelvin, plus it also tends to pick up a greenish tint. I think by you using your flash under those conditions made an excellent exposure with the whites coming out really nice. Nicely done Scott. :)

Hello Scott,
The circumstances in which you took this shot speaks volumes about your superior technical expertise at PP level.
The close-up image is faultless and brings forth the character of this fierce bird beautifully.
Well done and thanks.

Hi, Scott.

Great portrait of so wonderful bird Scott.

I like it a lot: composition, POV, DOF, focus, sharpness, color, lighting, background, framing, notes.

I don't like it: nothing.

In spite of the slow exposure the sharpness and focus are really very good.
Thank you and regards... Ricardo

No fault here, excellent detail and flawless exposure!

Hi Scott,

The advantage of digital photography. Without your explanation I would have thought this was shot outside, light and BG. This surely is the difference between an artist and a photographer, because you created art here. I always have this argument with people who are saying we are cheating with digital manipulation.

We are artist and not only photo journalists. Sometimes we report, but mostly we create. You did the latter here and the outcome is stunning.

Hi Scott

Another superb portrait from you!
This is really a great symbol of and for the U.S. and i would really be happy to get this close so as i could snap such a great shot!
In both of the photos the POVs you chose are very nice and work excellent to try and give a natural light look as much as possible.
The details are very neat and sharp (i'm sure the IS helped...just as you said) and the colors are charming and well saturated.
The only nit i found here is the reflection of the two neon lights from its eye...but that's if i'm really mean and critical ;)
The rest is "top job" !
Great work, my friend!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi Scott,
What a magnificent photo of this awesome bird. The details in the feathers are breath taking. I read your reply about the overhead lighting, it really did gave you an awesome lighting situation. The blue BG is nice and peacefull for the eye.
TFS,
Niek

Hello Scott,
What an impressive look he's giving you in the WS picture... This must have been intimidating indeed. I really liked reading those notes about how you managed with this shot. It was very useful for me. I envy you to have had this chance to see them flying. It happened to me twice and I still remember clearly this great feeling I had. Those birds are truly majestic.

I think that you managed more than well with this portrait. Conditions as you described were very difficult but the result worth the efforts. I'm amazed about the use of ISO 800 that doesn't appear at all. Also, I don't know how you could have had a so nice result by using Neat Image... There is something I must be doing wrong because I can't recover sharpness after using it.

This is a beautiful portrait and his expression is different this time as he seems to be almost smiling. Well done and TFS,
Claudine

Awesome photo, I love the background as it gives great contrast to this magnificent bird.

Well done, my friend!

Alli

Hi Scott,
This proud bird looks better everytime I see him :)
Excellent sharpness, detail, DOF, color, and exposure. I think the slightly low POV works well, along with the blue sky BG..
Very well done.

Hi Scott,
Nice portrait u have managed to catch the nice light in the eyes
that give it a "before our eyes feel" to the pic.

Hi Scott,
A master in Photoshop with the right result!
TFS, José M.

Hello Scott,
One of my favourite subjects :-) Great portrait shot, given the conditions (flourescent light - ugh) a great result. You did well to isolate the Eagle against a neutral background. I thought on first look that this was taken outside against a blue sky. Great work. I thought the detail in the eye and pens were a bit soft so I did a workshop, hope you don't mind.
Cheers,
Adrian
