[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
With this photo taken yesterday at a local lake, I wanted to show you how the Ring-billed Gull changes color with age. The one on the right is much younger than the one on the left.

The adult Ring-billed Gull (Larus delawarensis) is a medium-sized gull, measuring 49cm from bill to tail, having a 124cm wingspan and weighing about 0.7 kg. Its white head, neck, underside and tail contrast with its grey wings (or back when the bird is at rest). The wing-tips are black with white spots and the legs and feet are yellow-green. A black ring encircles its yellow bill near the tip.

Young Ring-billed Gulls are a mottled brown, much different in colouring from the adults. With each successive moult, or shedding of old feathers, they lose more of the brown and develop more of the white, grey, and black patterning. They attain full adult plumage when they are three years old.

Hi Ken,
What an interesting shot! "Every generation has its way..." ;)
I like the motion, the details and the sharpness. Of course, I wouldn't mind seeing the full reflection in the water and have the tree branch removed (or moved more to the right), but it remains a good (and instructive) capture :)
TFS,
Toni.

Funny moment captured, excellent compo.

Excellent,TFS and for informative note too.
Best greetings Milos

Hello Ken,
You caught great action here; I love those movements, details, exposure and composition. The reflection in the water is superb too and so are those little droplets :-) I think that it would have been a good picture to applied Neat Image on the BG only ;) Well seen and well done. Thanks,
Claudine

Hi Ken,

You show us a great and dynamic picture, captured with an excellent sense of timing! Very good composition with the log in the foreground adding perspective to your shot. Also, by placing the subjects into one of the strongest points of the picture you followed the rule of thirds and the final result is spectacular. Excellent reflections in the water surface!
The colors look natural and well exposed and the contrast is just OK! The picture definitely shows the color change that comes with age in this extremely streamlined birds. The details also look great and sharp and they are not overexposed in the bright areas. Very good idea to use a fast shutter speed to freeze the action! The frozen splashes in the water look excellent and the wing tips of the gulls are slightly blurred, just enough to suggest movement. I wonder why did you choose the largest aperture of your lens? I heard that the vast majority of lenses offer the best image quality stopped down (to F/8?). Of course your shot doesn't need image quality improvement but I was just curious. Overall, this is a great post with a high quality photo and very informative notes! Thank you my friend!

With Friendly Regards,
Eddie
