This is a shot that I took at Estero Lagoon, which is right off of Ft. Myers Beach. The lagoon is small, but has an amazing amount of birds feeding there at low tide. The early morning light was amazing on this day. I waded out into the bay and kneeled down in the water to create this composition and get the angle of light I wanted. A nice warm breeze was blowing the egret's breeding plumage.

Snowy Egret (Egretta thula)

The snowy egret is about two feet in length and has a wingspan of about three feet. It has white feathers, a yellow patch of skin around its eyes, a black bill and black legs with bright yellow feet. In breeding season, it has lacy plumes on its head, neck and back. Males and females look alike.

Lovely shot, Scott - the feathers being ruffled by the beeze is a super effect.

I particularly like the wee flash of yellow, it stands out beautifully against the white and blue. The ripples on the water and the reflections on the bird add a lovely depth to the scene. Very pleasing pic.

Hi Scott

Wow.... love the grunge look with the hair! Excellent exposure and awesome light. Just brilliant MF... thank you! :-)

Hi Scott,
Excellent work, I love the way you've caught the light bouncing between the bird and the water, kind of a reflection of a reflection, can't recall ever seeing that before. Great exposure and pin sharp detail and sounds like you made the effort to get the shot you wanted. Nice work.
Cheers,
Adrian

Hi Scott

A truly stunning capture of this snowy egret. You’re wading and kneeling exercise paid of full dividends here. That ensured a rather interesting low level POV.

It seems like you pressed the shutter release button just in time. A moment later and the ripples you created in the water would have completely disturbed the reflection of the bird on the water surface. Fortunately you captured most of the bird in the reflection while the light that bounced back on to the bird created some interesting lines across the egret's body. The darkish BG works well to compliment the white bird while it also emphasised that wind blown plumage on the head. The exposure was well controlled, the colours are great, and the details are stunning.

Great work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Scott,
haha, let's introduce a bad feather day. A very nice and sharp capture of this egret. DO you know if this species is directly related to the european Egretta garzetta?

Hello Scott,
This is a beautiful capture of a Snowy Egret with its back to the breeze with a fine swept effect on the plumes. The reflection and sharpness add to this fine composition.

Splendid photo, Scott. I can tell it's a breezy day. Sharp and great exposure holding feather details well. Normally I would suggest cropping from below a little. But the reflection goes all the way down, so it's perfect as is. Very well done. TFS
Best wishes,

Hi Scott

Indeed a splendid light and you took advantge of it in hte best possible way!
The composition here is also wonderful and the look on this egret is amazing. The fact that there's also a nice wind blowing its plumage brings the "something special" ingredient to the shot but also makes another thing stand out really well - the small ripples on the water (both in front and in the back of the bird) that make those reflections so beautiful.
The colors are most charming, the exposure is really spot-on and the POV is exceptional.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Scott,

Great shot of this beautiful snowy egret, I very much like the reflecting light on the plumage of this gorgeous bird, the rippling water is a bonus and makes for an even greater picture. Kinda reminds me of a John Shaw photo. :)

Hi Scott!

Excellent portrait of this innocent bird :-) Composition, pose, details and light are of course great, but most of all I like different shades of white on bird's feathers and stripes of light reflected on its body. It makes this picture unique.

Hello Scott,
Great..!
I like how the feathers are blowing in the wind, I also notice the reflected light in the plumage...
A well composed image, where the typical facial expression of the bird is well captured!

Scott,
I think your composition along with amazing detail really makes this picture special. I believe THIS could go in any magazine. The plumage is perfectly captured and the small just of land here keeps my eye near the center of the photo. I also like how the ripples fade into the distance, so softly. Absolutely stunning work.
VERY well done, what a great shot!

Hi Scott,

Hello Scott
This Egret seems to have a mane instead of plumes, maybe he's missing letting his hair down ;)
The shot is really gorgeous and captured in very good timing. You did a perfect work with lighting. I like a lot the ripples of water reflected on its plumage.

Hello Scott,
It´s a marvelous shot, the exposure is very well managed, not overexposed. The details are superb, but the best are the wave reflections over the egret.
10 points job

What a great picture Scott! It is a shame that I missed so many of your last pictures, being a little busier these times... Details, POV, composition and exposure are just amazing! This white color is perfectly exposed and I love the wind in its beautiful feathers. Reflection and colors are superb. It is a very fluffy Egret :-) Well done! Thanks,
Claudine

Hello Scott,

I usually pick the last picture to critique but this one is amazing! I haven't seen it before. It seems you were at the right place at the right time!

Composition:

Your composition is flawless! In my opinion it couldn't be done better! You placed the bird along the right third of the picture and gave it plenty of space in front of it to look into! The reflections in the water are wonderful and, very interesting, you also captured the sun light reflected from the ripples on the water surface! I am fascinated as I haven't seen this before! The water makes a perfect background since it has no distracting colors. In conjunction with the well controlled DOF, this isolates the bird very well. I also like the profile of the bird, easily readable against the plain background. The very soft feathers blowing in the breeze are the cherry on the cake! It is an outstanding composition!

Colors:

I love the way the reflected light on the white plumage creates beautiful bright color tones.

Contrast:

The contrast of the white bird with the darker water is excellent. Even in the plumage, the contrast is great as it defines every feather. Also the yellow face contrasts very well with the black bill!

Exposure:

Great exposure on the white feathers! Fortunately the early sun is very appropriate for photography thus helping you avoid overexposure in the plumage. The shadows are soft leaving the details within clearly visible. I guess that using filters also helped the exposure a lot! Outstanding work!

Focus:

Judging by the sharp details, you obviously focused on the egret. The small aperture allowed you to capture the ripples until far in the background. Stopping down to f/11 was an interesting choice. I think the judgment behind was that you didn't need a very blurred background since it was already plain so you made sure to keep the whole bird in focus by allowing a deep DOF. Whatever the reason for this setting, the results are spectacular!

An outstanding picture from both a technical and artistic point of view! The useful informations you provided in the note complete your post! Very well done! Thanks for sharing!

With Friendly Regards,
Eddie

Very simple yet nice composition. I like the way water surface creates reflections upon the bird's plumage. Also the long feathers waving with wind look great.
