Owl Butterfly
Caligo eurilochus

This is another one of the butterflies that I photographed during my last visit at the Montreal Botanical Garden, where visitors can attend a special event, called «Butterflies Go Free». One can admire a good number of specimens of tropical butterflies and morphs species that were released in one of the Garden’s greenhouses. That greenhouse has been customized to meet the butterflies’ and moths’ essential needs and keep them healthy. The temperature, humidity and light are kept just right, and platters of fruit and nectar-bearing and other plants have been provided for the winged guests to feed, rest and breed on.

The Owl Butterfly ( Caligo eurilochus) belongs to the family Brassolidae and the order Lepidoptera. It lives in South and Central America. Its wingspan varies from 10 to 13 cm (4 to 5 in).

When I cropped the image, I saw another insect above the butterfly that I had not seen at shooting time. The big difference in size between those two is the reason for the title of my posting. I thank you for viewing and hope you will like.

The details you've captured here are amazing, including the "little" insect. Wow, hard to imagine the small size of it. WEll done.

Not the big one but the little one. I think that I had made here a cropp half on the big one for a better balance, but I like the effect. good job anyway. Gr. Jaap

Voilà une chouette photo. Avant même d'avoir vu le titre, j'ai pensé à David et Goliath. L'effet est saisissant. La pose des deux insectes est parfaitement synchronisée et le cadrage en accentue la valeur. Beau travail.

Très bonne macro, la pose des deux insecte est et l'éclairage sont parfaits. J'aime bien que l'on voit beaucoup de détails, la photo est nette. Peut-être un peu trop de grains dans limage.

On voit bien d'où il tire son nom, ce papillon.
Une composition toute personnelle. Le passage de l'ombre à la lumière est un régal visuel. Je ne voit pas de défauts (malheureusement ;-)).

This kind of photo is why I love to take pictures. Of course, I haven't done so well yet. It is always a reward when you get to see it full size and find that surprise element that you hadn't seen at the time. This is very well captured, Serge. Congratulations and thank you.
