I finally have a mammal good enough to dedicate to arfer!
:D (I hope)

Despite the black coat, this is indeed an Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), native to Ontario, eastern Canada and the Eastern and Midwestern United States.

The black coat is a melanistic ([dark-pigmented] the opposite of albinistic [unpigmented]) adaptation that may well give it an advantage in some areas. Some scientists believe that the dark coats allow this mutation to retain heat from sunlight, which means that they need less food to maintain body heat.

In the forests, the darker coat makes them more visible to predators like hawks, but in the city, there are fewer predators. The result? The darker-coated grey squirrel is becoming more and more common in urban environments, a case of natural selection at work.

Given that we urban humans have been on this continent a relatively short time, it does make me wonder what will happen to the wild animal population over time. Will we eventually really have a city squirrel and a country squirrel, two separate breeds? Come to think of it, the children’s story about the city mouse and the country mouse begins to seem a prophetic tale!

Thanks for looking

I love this little guy. He is wonderful, the pose is beyond repoach, and I love the details in his little hands. He's stuffing his face, and well, I went kind of nutty over him. Wonderful capture - squirrels are wonderful creatures. I love the POV and I love the texture of his fur.

Yikes.....how interesting...fine capture and one not seen often, or at all as in my case. Nicely noted and the frame truly fits this one!

Hello Silke,
great portrait of a melanistic Grey Squirrel: I don't think I have seen one as black as this one before! Black is beautiful! Great sharpness and composition against the grassy BG.
Well done and TFS!

Sooo cute, Silke,
this guy is so lovely, the pose, the sharpness, how could you get so close - here in Germany they are so shy and don't let you come near. Thanks and greetings

We have some sort of rock squirrel here that looks a lot like that. They live in those big rock fences and places like that.

A gorgeous shot....wonderfully composed again and just adorable!

Hallo Silke
Such a beautiful capture of this black squirrel and a lovely dedication. A lovely close up filled with a variety of features and details. I just love the big black eyes, the ears standing up straight, cute little fingers, the most spectacular the thick tail, and don't forget the nuts. The green grass emphasise the colour of the fur well. A very special photo. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna
