While in Yellowstone in May we found this pair of Barrow's Goldeneye swimming down the Lamar River.

Barrow's Goldeneye
Bucephala islandica
General Description

By Andrew Slater

The Barrow's Goldeneye is primarily a bird of the Pacific slopes of Canada, in British Columbia and Yukon. A number cross over the mountains, however, to breed on the Alberta side.

This duck spends the winter on inshore waters of the Pacific Ocean, and arrives in the Rocky mountains in May. It departs in late September, after which several individuals usually spend the winter on the Bow River in Calgary, among the much more numerous Common Goldeneyes.

Another diving duck, the Barrow's Goldeneye eats the larvae of damsel flies and dragonflies. It will also consume crustaceans and some vegetable matter.

The nest of this goldeneye is in a tree by a secluded mountain lake or pond. It uses a tree cavity, often an old woodpecker hole, and lines it with down.

Hi Rick,
lovely capture of this pair speeding along, interesting shaped bills and head, seems 'stubbier'hthan the usual duck somehow? Nice composition with the inclusion of the stones in the BG - good work my friend!

The water has that summer warmth to it Rick. I wonder if it is simply us down here going through high temps...as per near 100 degrees for 2 days now...expecting terrible storms soon...bet on it...A very calming image...Ducks seem very adaptable to different weather..they do make a fine pair:-)

Hi Rick,

Such a sweet shot of this lovely couple swimming so close to one another. Wonderful to see the differences between male and female. Excellent colors and details - as usual he is more striking than she. Wonderful compositions with the rocks in the background and the lovely water with the splashes and waves.

They are an amazing couple, those ducks are superb! I had never seen one and the male, particularly, looks like he is painted. Nice light, beautiful colours, thanks again monsieur Rick, this is a jewel.

Francine

Awe...how cute.
Hi Rick,
Your Goldeye make such a nice pair. Their black colour against the water is a nice contrast. Plus the pebbles above them seem to frame them into the picture. Interesting how they have different coloured beaks.

I think we saw goldeneyes swimming in the Lamar Valley... maybe we saw the same ones!...we just didn't see each other! I'm going to post my photos from Yellowstone even though there is a lot of snow in them. I do better if I just post things in order. I bet we got some similar shots. I did get a great shot of a mountain bluebird on an orange lichen covered rock next to the Lamar River. I never do too well with birds... they seem to move too fast for me but this one just sat there and waited for me to shoot it from the vehicle. Yours is a great shot to compare the male and female.

Hi Rick

I have been away for a few days - sorry I missed some of your postings.

Lovely composition and detail. You were lucky to get so close - did you have to crop much?

Hello Rick

A lovely capture of this pair.
The details are excellent and the colours and markings show well, and the sexual dimorphism is well displayed.
Well focused with sharp details.

What a lovely moment you've frozen, Rick!very well done!
Goldy

Excellent detail, here. I love the framing, the difference between the male and female, and also the water moving. I also like the way the sun illuminates these two without washing out any details.

Excellent POV and DOF.
