Wood Lily / Western Wood Lily
Lilium philadelphicum

While out for a walk this morning behind my fence I found four Wood Lilies. This is the first time I noticed this flower blooming in my neighborhood. The Wood Lily is not a common flower as it usually ends up being picked by someone. Once picked the plant dies and won't come back. Many wild flowers are like this, once picked they are gone forever.

The Wood Lily flowers in June and July in Montane/dry areas. It grows up to 50cm, the one in the photo was only about 25cm tall. People often mistake the Wood Lily for a Tiger Lily. Tiger Lilies have insignificant leaves and a large nodding flower.

The Wood Lily can be found in southeast B.C., Alberta and east to Quebec. It also extends south to New Mexico, North Dakoda, Ohio and Michigan.

The Native Blackfoot people ate the bulbs whole and also used it in soup.

Happy Canada Day!

Magnific flower, I like its beauty, you´ve done a perfect photo of it. Very nice details despite soft light, I like intense colors also.

Oh, I saw the beautiful Lady's Slipper but this is a beautiful sight, well captured and so colourful! I hope for you that people leave it there and that you can enjoy its flowering years after years. I didn't visit your gallery in a while, it seems there are too many people with too many interesting posts to visit! Happy Canada Day to you too!

Francine

It does not look like a Tiger Lily, janice, you've captured the difference so beautifully here!A lovely flower! And a lovely shot, very beautiful, indeed! As I keep saying, I wish I knew what to say is great in tech terms, but I don't know aperture from focal length(and i have no interest to know in a hurry, either, my eye knows what's beautiful:), so I'll wait till I get someone who can teach me) In the meaanwhile, all I can say is it's a very well lit, clean, and aesthetically appealing shot, framed very well!
