Pied-billed Grebe, Podilymbus podiceps, a common little water-bird that I have enjoyed watching ever since I was a child. They are good divers, swimming underwater to catch their food, which consists of various small fish, amphibians and invertebrates.

Here in Illinois, they were on the Threatened Species list for quite a while due to loss of habitat, but thanks to work that has been done to ensure that they have appropriate habitat, they have rebounded nicely, particularly in the areas surrounding Chicago and have been removed from the Threatened Species list.

These two were splashing around and grooming themselves, got their feathers all ruffled up, so they are looking a little disheveled. They'll be leaving soon for the trip to their wintering grounds to the south, traveling as far as Panama.

They were in a nice-sized marsh near my home, McGinnis Slough which is owned and managed by the Cook County Forest Preserve District, maintained specifically for wetland and shore birds, which flock there in large numbers.

Very nice photo John, of a bird that I'm not familiar with. I don't recall ever seeing one here in Ohio, but that certainly doesn't mean we don't have any.
When I first viewed your post I thought they were coots, which we have in abundance around here. The one in the back looks to me like it is a young bird. I wonder, does the male and female look similar?
Love the rich blue color of the water and the relaxed pose of the birds. They don't seem to notice that you are even there.
Well done! Very informative notes! TFS.

Hello John. Good looking new avatar :-) This is very nice framing of these juvs (are they?). The light and water lilies in the pond making this excellent and pleasing image. So lucky for you to have a marsh close to home. Thanks for sharing and best regards. Jusni
