[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hello my friends, I am back after a while. I started working and my time is now scarce, plus, ironically, summer seems to be just beginning here, as it ran so much during the month of July until mid-August. Now it is warm like it has not been during summer.

So I will not post as much as I would like but I still visit TN and will be critiquing, not as much, but once in a while. I hope you understand that it may be time consuming to post and critique and I cannot do it as much as I used to.

I am proposing to you a 3 for 1 special. I was going to the forest at the Regional Park of St-Jean-de-Matha when I saw this huge dragonfly. I followed it and suddenly realized it had a prey between its legs. First of all, I didn't know they were "killers" like that. You can see a cricket that's been hit by the dragonfly.

When I came home and opened the file, to my dismay there was also a fly on the head of the dragonfly... so, very humbly, I am posting this so you see that nature, sometimes, is generous and cruel, depending where the observer is standing.

When I finished shooting this scene, I was feeling kind of dizzy. You can also see some cricket "juice" in the eye of the dragonfly. Well...

I didn't stop making pictures even though I didn't post much and I took so much that I wouldn't know where to start and show you. There are flowers, a lot of mushrooms (with all the rain that fell here), some insects, but mostly flowers, moss and mushrooms. See you soon!

No! You are not allowed to leave us even if for a short break. I will haunt you:-) I shall come to Quebec and stand outside, limping on my bad feet and telling you to come and take images....you are too valuable a photographer (*as this perfect image and note shows). You will stay...I must give you an order? Achhhh.. You would never listen..but we love your photos and you take care...try not to be too busy...I for one, love it when you post. You grab not only my eye, but my attention to words which make me think....

Quelle prise!

Your 3-in-1 image is stunning in terms of its contents, Francine.
This is a situation that is not an everyday happening.
In that sense, you picture is a "scoop" -- to use the journalistic jargon.
The three creatures in the picture -- a dragonfly, a grasshopper and a housefly -- are together for a fleeting moment in the never ending saga of existence.
The image is technically perfect with sharp focus, rich colours and faultless details.
Very grateful to you for sharing this image with us.

Hi Claudine!

It's a pleasure to see you are back! And it seems that you have to accept the inevitable like most of us: we have to return to work... Grrrr!

Your posting is impressive, although I'm not sure if the word cruel is appropriate. We, the human beings, are cruel when we decide to hurt somebody. Animals don't attack without good reasons... Anyway, the image you present us is impressive and, moreover, is well composed and exposed. I also appreciate your narrative notes.

Don't worry about not being so much present on TN, it's the same for me and probably for all those who have to work. Important is that you keep in touch... what would TN be without your warm words!

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Francine,

An amazing capture, Francine!
As I don't know much about N. American insects I can't supply any ID's but the scene is clear for us to see: a dragonfly eating its grasshopper prey while a Flesh fly looks on from a a vantage point on the dragonfly's thorax.
Fine composition, lighting and sharpness and the POV among the vegetation allows to see this phase of the drama well.
Thanks,
Ivan

Salut!

Claudine

Hello Francine,
If you post dramatic scenes like this one we'll put up with you only appearing now and then - it is really terrific! What a huge grasshopper it has caught and the fly scratching it on the head looks really funny!
Excellent timing with great focus on the main action. Fine colours and very well composed too! Brilliant!
TFS and regards, Ulla

Salut Francine,
Quelle macro, trois insectes!

Hi Francine,
what an excellent macro of this amazing scene!
I've never seen a dragonfly eating a grasshopper before... and then a crazy fly on its head too! :-)

Excellent composition and POV.
Perfect exposure.
Very detailed.

Congrats on your new "light" toy as well :-))

Very well done,
Joe

hi Francine,
superb capture and excellent timing
perfect point of view for this cruel moment of nature

Hi Nina,
Unique image. I've never seen this combination of players before..
The drama of the kill, and the idle bystander :)
Excellent point of focus and details. Very good color & exposure also.
The real deal ;-}
Be well mf,
Howard

Bonjour Francine,

Mariki

Hi Francine

Very nice and interesting capture of this big dragonfly.
I found an "equivalent" species here some time ago and i was very happy to have seen it in the wild...so, i'm pretty sure you were excited when you met this one :)
Even though you didn't get one of those "typical great macros", with just a grass, a dragonfly and a uniform BG, i still think that the photo here as an excellent value because of the moment it catches. To see such a power dragonfly with such a big prey like this is indeed amazing and therefore so is your shot. One for educational books :)

Bravo and TFS

T'as encore changé d'appareil?!? Merci,

Mario

bonjour Francine

Dear Nina,
From your notes i can make out the fcat that you are in the midst of a hectic season. And i hope you are going great:0
This is one of those rare moments man aided by technology is able to get a closer look at the works of nature at its rawest best.
What a amazing capture....luck and fate had it that it be recorded by you...the colours and the lighting are fantastic and so are the details.
Very well done.
