Gorgeous Evelynn,
The textures, color and lighting are beautiful and very eye catching. A vertical post is the only way to show this stunning image. TFS!!

Hello Evelynn,
An interesting capture, both of the texture of the rock and the question it poses of the geology.
The smooth pillar-like appearance reminds me of the inside of a cathedral, as does the lighting.
The colour suggests sandsstone, in which case the strata have become vertical, but there is probably a completely different explanation.
James probably knows the answer.
TFS this fine image,
Ivan

Hi Evelynn
This is a lovely shot showing with beautiful lighting and colours. The rock fall in the foreground gives added focus and interest. This is a typical scene of the American SW - an exfoliated rock surface streaked with desert varnish (the black - silica which has 'melted' and oozed onto the rock surface due to the intense desert heat. The exfoliated is caused the the diurnal (day/night) difference in heating which causes a stress fracture to form and eventually the rock face sheers off (an alternative form of single rock exfoliation can be seen if you look at Devil's MArbles under Australia in my folder - colours not so good as it was midday).
It is sandstone - the bedding is just off horizonal if you look carefully - the desert varish is running down the rock and is not bedding planes.

Wonderful photo in a great composition and texture. Very beautiful warm colours. The contrasts between the lines in the foreground and background are fantastic.
Kind regards,

Hello Evelynn,
Wow, this is fantastic and you've hidden this away for some time!! The point of view, the sharp details of the rock face, the contrasting pile of rocks in the foreground, the light and the colours are all fabulous.
The vertical cropping is perfect too - brilliant work!
Many thanks and cheers, Ulla

Hi Evelynn,
You have right, he really have a contrast between the textures of the foreground and background. The colors are very good and I have nothing to say about the composition.
Congratulations,
Eric.

Very dramatic, Evelynn.
i wish there were a fox or something at the base, to give us a feel for the grandeur of this scene.
I too find the juxtaposition of the smooth vertical cliff and the rough edged jumble of rocks intriguing. The light variation of the cliff gives a good sense of the depth of the "cave". Your composition brings the most out of this natural sculpture.

Hello Evelynn,
I'm going to 'listen' to James. It has nothing to do with expectations:-)
It isn't some kind of cathedral; figured that out. Beautiful layer of varnish.
Well done!

And in addition to James...there have been more arches, not this of course, in Utah which have fallen this year than in the last 100 and USGS is calling it because of drought. I have many links and notes as concerns this on my Pinpoint Newsletter, the geologic group I have run on the net since 1992...Fantastic image Eve!

Hi Evelynn
Another wonderful and totally original shot from you!
The colors here are simply dominant and the bold composition is most charming...i really like it!
The morning light played an important part, too, enhancing the natural contrast of the scene.
Very nice work, indeed!
Bravo and TFS

Hi Evelynn,
It's a real beauty alright. Beautiful contrast between light and shade and the rich tones of the Sandstone makes the perfect backdrop. Very nice framing too, well done!

Hi Evelynn,
Sure, it´s a wonder land, rock formation and light reflection on the wall in shadows are the best in your image. Excellent job

This is a very effective composition, you've really shown the contrast between the vertical rock and the rough foreground. The use of the brush in the bottom of the frame is very effective!

The chaos in the rocks and the vertical lines in the cliff, now that I like.
cheers to you from down under.
Are you enjoying you 400D?
I just bought a 450D and it suits my needs beautifully.
Did a dreadful thing though. Bought a Canon 70-200 F4 L IS and it's yummy.... no eating for three years though.
