Wood Duck Ducklings: These three ducklings were hatched in the Beaver Marsh at IRA Trailhead in CVNP.
The Beaver Marsh is located north of the Ira Trailhead along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. There the trail is a boardwalk that crosses over the marsh and offers up-close views to the marsh and the animals that make their home there. The marsh’s natural richness has earned it a Watchable Wildlife designation and is one reason why Audubon Ohio named CVNP as an Important Bird Area.
The Beaver Marsh epitomizes the transformation that has made the rebound of wildlife possible. Before the park was established in 1974, dumping, mining and industry were among common land uses in the valley. A junkyard filled the site of today’s Beaver Marsh until the early 1980s, when the Portage Trail Group of the Sierra Club helped clean it up.
Today the area is home to more than 65 other animal species. During the 34 years since the park was established, we’ve been able to report observations of wildlife often missing for generations. Beavers, coyotes, great blue herons and, most recently, bald eagles are among the most notable returns. |

Nicely composed shot Kris,
They are really cute at this stage of their lives, and you have captured them wonderfully. Looks like you were able to get fairly close to them for this great shot! Interesting and informative notes!!
