After we had left Jasper NP, we went to Wells Gray Provincial Park. We camped near a little town called Clearwater and we were very close to the actual park. For over 2,5 weeks we had seen numerous squirrels now but we hadn't been able to capture one on our cmos chip. A funny little squirrel came near our campervan and luckily we had the right lens attached. I threw a peanut and my girlfriend snapped a few shots. The conditions were horrible as she had to zoom in at 263mm, but could not get the shutterspeed faster than 1/80 (because of lack of light). Of course we should have set a higher ISO speed or used the tripod, but there was no time for that. The fact this photo is pretty well focused is entirely due to the steady hands of my girlfriend.

Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus or Pine Squirrel, Chickaree)

Description - This squirrel is rust-red to greyish-red above being brightest on the sides, white or greyish-white below and the tail is similar to the back color but is outlined with a broad, black band edged in white. The coat is duller in the summer and a black line separated the back and underbelly colours. The average red squirrel weighs 7-12 ounces.

Distribution - The red squirrel is abundant in any kind of forest, coniferous, pine, mixed or hardwood forests, often around buildings. They occur through much of Canada and most of B.C.

Wells Gray Provincial Park is located in British Columbia, Canada and also known as the waterfall park due to the many waterfalls within the park. Wells Gray has something to offer every outdoor interest: lush alpine meadows, excellent birding and wildlife viewing opportunities; hiking for every ability, ranging from a few minutes on a level trail to many days with a map and compass; boating, canoeing and kayaking. Guiding businesses offer horseback riding, canoeing, river-rafting, fishing and hiking; and the history enthusiast can learn about the early homesteaders, trappers, and prospectors, or about the natural forces that produced Wells Gray’s many volcanoes, waterfalls, mineral springs and glaciers.

Merry Christmas to you and to those whom you cherish, Pieter, and thanks for sharing your beautifull pictures. I really believe that it is worth to make it to be in contact with our increasingly small world.
I am at Granby with my father. We have a great time together preparing the banquet to come for Christmas.
Take care my young friend.
Luc

Hello Pieter, good to see you back. This is a very nice image. I like the pose of the squirrel and the red berry looks great. I think it could do with a little USM but that's all. Well done.

Very cute little Red Squirrel you captured here Pieter. Lovely pose and it does not even look the slightst scared. Very good and natural colours, great sharpness and very good composition. Great informative note too.

Pieter, this photo is excellent.
Perfect composition, great exposure, very pleasing DOF and a charming subject.
I don't know if it's the DOF or motion blur but I get the feeling that the camera was slightly rotated at the moment of capture. There's a sense of movement around the edges. It's not a criticism at all, I like it.
