If you need a reason to go to Alaska, Denali is it. Words can't decribe how fantastic this place is. With three times the size of Yellowstone this park boasts an enormous number of wild animals. Bears, Caribou, Moose, you name it.

The first day we went into the park we saw this sow with her two cute cubs. In front of our lens they crossed the Toklat River. The cub in the left almost drowned when he crossed the second part of the river. Luckily he made it and we got a series of photos of all the action. :) If I can find the time I'll upload those photos as workshops.

The Grizzly Bear, sometimes called the Silvertip Bear, is a powerful brownish-yellow bear that lives in the uplands of western North America. It has traditionally been treated as a subspecies, Ursus arctos horribilis, of the brown bear living in North America.

Grizzly Bears reach weights of 180–680 kg (400–1,500 lb); the male is on average 1.8 times as heavy as the female, an example of sexual dimorphism. Their coloring ranges widely across geographic areas, from blond to deep brown or black. These differences, once attributed to subspeciation, are now thought to be primarily due to the different environments these bears inhabit, particularly with regard to diet and temperature.

The Grizzly has a large hump over the shoulders which is a muscle mass used to power the forelimbs in digging. The head is large and round with a concave facial profile. In spite of their massive size, these bears can run at speeds of up to 55 km/h (35 mph).

Normally a solitary, nocturnally active animal, in coastal areas the Grizzly congregates alongside streams and rivers during the salmon spawn. Every other year females (called sows) produce one to four young (most commonly two) which are small and weigh only about 500 g (1 pound). Sows are very protective of their offspring.

The current range of the Grizzly Bear extends from Alaska, south through much of Western Canada, and into the northern Northwestern United States including Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. It is originally native to a greater range than this.

Hello Pieter, well done on this capture. It's like a family holiday! It's simple and more importantly...wild :-)

Very well done.

Hi Pieter,
I can't remember what I said about this shot previously so I'll start again :-) It's a great shot for sure, seeing these beautiful animals in their own environment. I like the composition showing us the surrounding terrain too. Great detail and exposure, natural colours and lovely white balance :-)
Best regards,
Adrian

Hi Pieter,
It did fix the colors better. Well done!

Hi Pieter!
First of all great story from great place! Alaska must be superb for nature lover and photographer. Very good scene, like from BBC movie. Wet bears look slightly funny. Good quality and what a meeting!

Hi Pieter

I can see a story here... now let me think, somewhere in the story it would say:

As she was sleeping, the three bears came home.

"Someone's been eating my porridge," growled the Papa bear.

"Someone's been eating my porridge," said the Mama bear.

"Someone's been eating my porridge and they ate it all up!" cried the Baby bear.

"Someone's been sitting in my chair," growled the Papa bear.

"Someone's been sitting in my chair," said the Mama bear.

"Someone's been sitting in my chair and they've broken it all to pieces," cried the Baby bear.

What do you think, would a story like this be a 'seller'? :-)

A lovely shot of this family. Well seen and shown. Sounds like you had a magnificent holiday. Look forward to more posts. :-)

Hi Pieter,
I envy you to have witnessed such a great moment! Nice POV and sharpness. These beautiful wild animals are majestic, lucky you! Well done and good white balance :-) TFS,
Claudine

Hello Pieter,
Very good shot! Great to see animals captured in wild. You did well on the POV and composition, details are very good too.
Very nice job!

What a great scene, Pieter, you were so lucky to see them. I've been watching a program on BBC about bears the past few weeks and they are in Alaska, probably the same place, by the look of it. Did you see any bears fishing for salmon or was it the wrong time of year? I'd love to see that.

There seems to be a slightly harsh look about this photo, maybe it's a tiny bit over exposed or maybe it's harshly sharpened, I don't know. I expect it looks much better on the full size image ;)
Andy

Hi Pieter,
Fantastic capture of this wonderful wild image, great natural colour.
Thanks for sharing!

What a fantastically wonderful capture, Pieter! I can't believe how lucky you were to see this in the natural habitat, what a cute little family.

P.S. Alan and I both had birthdays this week, mine was yesterday!

This is a super composition and an excellent capture of this "teddy bear's picnic." I guess the words of that children's song should be: "If you go down to the *stream* today, You're in for a big surprise!"
I look forward to another post from you some time soon!

Hello Pieter,
this must be quite somehting to experience such a sighting in the wilderness. I don't think I could have held the camera still enough to get such a nice shot ;-). Wonderful POV and great details. A very well composed shot.

Hi Pieter, you posted this while I was away.
Good to see the bears in the wild. (We don't have any bears in Akld Zoo now, and they say they won't get any more - too hard to look after!)
Mama bear and her twins, and they are really wild. It must have been exciting seeing them out in the open like this. Great capture, thank you,
Janice

Hello Pieter,
